Yangon (formely Rangoon) is by far the largest city in Myanmar with a population of nearly 5,000,000. The city is located at the convergence of the Yangon and Bago Rivers, and is about 30 km away from the Gulf of Martaban.
Yangon name is a combination of the two words yan and koun which mean "enemies" and "run out of" respectively. It is also translated as "end of strife". "Rangoon" most likely comes from the British corruption of the pronunciation of "Yangon"
It is the main gateway to Myanmar as all international flights arrive to Mingaladon airport (some also land in Mandalay’s international airport)
Yangon is a town of contrasts: while downtown is a densely built area full of blocks of ugly buildings and heavy traffic, the rest of the city is rather appealing with nicely maintained parks. Attractions in the capital are modest compared to those found in the rest of the country, but still Shwedagon pagoda is all that makes Yangon a must to see |
