!Quel ramo del lago di Como..." The origins of Como as an urban centre date back to the Roman Era: the naturalist Pliny the Elder and his nephew the writer Pliny the Younger were born and stayed for long periods there. Como has the appearance of a mediaeval town; remains of this period are the Baradello Castle, the city walls and towers, the "Broletto" Tower and magnificent Cathedral (see pict. on left), which building was prolonged until the Baroque time.
Worth visiting are Romanesque churches of San Fedele and Sant'Abbondio and many other modern building such as the "Tempio Voltiano"- dedicated to the great Como scientist Alessandro Volta - the "Palazzo Terragni"designed in the 1920s by G. Terragni.
The Province of Como is rich in artistic and natural beauty. From Romanesque churches to rationalist architecture, from the wild valleys to the flowering gardens on the shores of the lake. |
