  • Luxor Temple was built in the heart of the ancient city of Thebes, and was connected to Karnak by a 3 kilometer processional way lined with sphinxes. Like most of the Karnak complex, Luxor Temple was also dedicated to the god Amun. Much of the temple core was built by the pharaoh Amenhotep III and then was added to over the years by other kings including Ramesses II.

The columns of the Temple resemble papyrus bundles symbolic of the primeval marsh from which the ancient Egyptians believed creation unfolded.

Valley of the Kings: Valley of the Kings
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The Valley of the Kings in Upper Egypt contains many of the tombs of pharaohs from the New Kingdom, including Tutankhamun and Ramesses the Great.
The Valley of the Kings actually has two components - the East Valley and the West Valley. It is the East Valley which most tourists visit and in which most of the tombs of the New Kingdom Pharaohs can be found. (The West Valley has only one remote tomb open to the public, that of Ay who was Tutankhamon's successor.)

Valley of the Kings: TOMB ENTRANCE, VALLEY of the KINGS
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • All ancient Egyptian tombs are entered through a passage way enscribed with the Egyptian Book of the Dead, a sort of manual to the Underworld. The owner of this particular tomb died before it was finished. The ceilings had been painted, but the walls were never finished. At the Valley of the Kings, you can buy a ticket to visit three tombs. Some, however, require an extra charge, including those of King Tut, Queen Nefertiri, Ramses the Great.

  • Luxor Museum contains one of the best displays of Egyptian antiquities in Egypt and it opened in 1975. Housed within a modern building, the collection is limited in the number of items, but they are beautifully displayed.

Once inside the main museum area, two of the first items that catch one's attention are an enormous red granite head of Amenhotep III and the cow-goddess head from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Spaced out around the ground floor are masterpieces of sculpture including a calcite double statue of the crocodile god Sobek and the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III
