Bombay, or Mumbai as we call it now, is a wonderful city with a lot of contrasts. It is a city which houses the rich, the middle class as well as the poor. In my eyes Bombay is a nice place to stay with most of the facilities of a modern city. Just as in Calcutta, Bombay also has many highrises and a throbbing life. The city is considered as the commercial capital of India as it has the headquarters of some of the most important industries in the country.
Bombay also has a different picture when it comes to the society of the city. Other than the highrises and fashionable stores Bombay has a stunning slum population of around 40% - unusually high by any standards. Infact, this city has the highest slum population when compared to any other Indian city. One reason for this is the high price of land and apartments in Bombay.
Shopping complexes, restaurants, bars, pubs are abandunt in the city and the nightlife in Bombay is well-known all over the country. But behold it! - these are not for everyone!
On the whole, Bombay is a nice place to visit and you should definitely noy miss this city if you are planning a visit to India.
Bombay, like Calcutta, is a big city and is crowded with people all the time. If you are stuck in a traffic jam in Bandra or Worli, you will come to realise this. However, the traffic police in Bombay are very efficient and they can handle the traffic efficiently keeping in mind the convenience of the commuters. The roads in Bombay are more or less good and other than some areas, the people have good civic sense too.
However, Bombay lacks the convenience of an underground railway system like Delhi or Calcutta. But in my opinion, the cabs can compensate for that to some extent. Other than that you can find auto-rickshaws and buses as means of public transport.
- Pros:Big, cosmopolitan, vibrant metropolis
- Cons:Sharp contrasts in the society, harshness
- In a nutshell:A mixedbag
