Niagara and Marilyn . . . I knew I would not meet Marylin Monroe at the Niagara falls, but at least I remembered the H. Hathaway movie, the thrilling scenes with these extraordinary falls as background, and the hot, erotic, "sex-appealing" performance of Marilyn . Niagara falls and sex ? ? Nothing in common probably, but strangely I thought of one, when visiting the other! I spent one short day at the Falls, coming from Toronto by Greyhound , the easiest way for a backpacking tourist . Geography course is not the purpose of this page and here is a link to know more on the falls: http://www.iaw.com/~falls/origins.html and some good pics on : web.ics.purdue.edu ; I just spent a day trying to avoid the crowds (not easy in summer, here), trying to make abstraction from most artifacts around, just trying to feel how it could be in natural state. Very impressive for an European, even an experienced traveller ( not a virtual one, a real one! ) . Like everybody, I purchased tickets but, unlike everybody, I walked, slowly , very slowly, listening as much as possible, filling my ears, my brain, my body with this overwhelming roaring; near the falls, or at the end of the tunnel ("journey behind the falls" as they call it) tried to get as wet as possible, yes, why not feeling the water , the moist, the drops falling on you. In the late afternoon, waiting for the bus back to Toronto, I had a walk in the small village of Niagara Falls, looking at the antique shops, watching the birds in the gardens and noticing almost nobody (compared to the crowds at the falls!) visited this small village near the bus terminal. People there are lucky not having the mass-tourists invading their place. |

| | How it was spoiled. . . We all like to visit some places and even have a coffe or beer after visiting (not all of us!) , use a toilet, etc. . . Mr MONEY probably drives a lot ( Probably? no, certainly!) of what we do on the planet. I add Google Earth images of the Niagara area before all the ugly buildings, hotels shopping centers were built. The pic is not nice and we see already buildings and contruction places. Everybody on earth is allowed to visit places like that, but how can we prevent building these ugly things, supposed to need everybody's needs. |

csordila Sat Aug 1, 2009 17:11 UTC I absolutely agree with your notices; the nature has been spoilt with a lot of overpriced ugly things. Among your tips is the most remarkable: Kokoryko was here!! By the way, many thanks for your Budapest visit with me. Best. Laszlo | Bwana_Brown Fri Mar 6, 2009 10:20 UTC Hermann, it looks like you had beautiful weather for your visit to the Falls! I agree re the 'tacky tourism' pitfalls but I mostly avoided that during my frozen Winter 1978 stop at Niagara. Great photos of your visit! | urvashi123 Sun Oct 7, 2007 04:02 UTC Oh god ! that is great , that's a boat near the falls , cool . can't explain how beautiful it is looking . | nomorewars Fri Jun 8, 2007 21:20 UTC Such splendid descriptions to go along with equally impressive pictures. I thank you very much for sharing your experience with me. |
