| The durian from the water side |
Five hours between two connecting flights. Last December I had 5 hours to spend in Singapore bwaiting for a flight to Europe. What to do during 4-5 hours in singapore? Massage ; one hour . do not expect I recommend or dis-recommend the place, a parlour near the old harbour (Boat Quay, or Clarke Quay)(the street along a channel with only lots of tourist-trapping open-air restaurants). Shopping, it was not far from christmas and I went shopping at Raffles Center from where I could see the Theatre / concert house (The Durian). Jalan-jalan di sekitar Durian : 2hours .An expo inside, and a walk around during that rainy afternoon. An old boat (now for tourists) in the harbour and the cranes in the background, some modern open-air art with this "mermaid", very erotic in fact, despite her full shape(s) and other sculptures with gave a really quiet, relaxing ambience to the area; I recommend to have a walk there if you want to forget the traffic, the general Singapore stress for a while (it is as good as the zoo, or the Orchid garden and much closer to the city ). It was a rainy day, I do not know how this place is crowded (or not) during nice weather. As a conclusion, the Durian is a nice quiet place during rainy days ;1.5 hours and then more or less another hour in the traffic, underground (MRT)and I had to catch my flight! Oh I forgot , in between some satay and a Tiger beer in an open-air food-mall in the south-Eastern area of Orchard Road (opposite Meridien more or less). So, for me by far better than waiting hours in an airport lounge (even 1st class) or being trampled by the shopping crowd on Orchard road! |
expo not a good pic, but this kind of exhibition surprised me. Look at the "angels" flying near the ceiling. |
The Durian The Durian is a spectacular fruit south-east Asian people appreciate a lot. To westerners, being trapped in a traffic jam near a durian market can be a nightmare !!! I do not like the smell, but it is tasty, in small quantity. . . . Did the architect think at it's taste when creating this building? |

robertgaz Tue May 20, 2008 03:05 UTC I'll be back here for a stop over this July :~) | tiabunna Sun Jan 21, 2007 12:05 UTC Singapore looks interesting, must get out and look around there at some time, rather than just transiting the airport. | Nemorino Wed Oct 25, 2006 20:24 UTC Happy birthday, Hermann. Once I had a layover in Singapore but no visa, so we took a bus tour from the airport. It was raining so hard we couldn't see anything, but they drove us up to the top of a hill and said the view from there was great, usually. |
