At one point I got hungry, walking in Chandni Chowk,in the middle of afternoon, and I looked for a place for a quick meal. In a small “pedestrian” street, I came across a place where a cook was baking chappati outside a very little restaurant; I stepped in, was the attraction of the place for a few seconds, then sat down at a plastic table, looked at what people were eating and, by gestures explained, I wanted the same: dal, chappati, onions and chilli. The dal was wonderful fresh, probably far from “high” cuisine, but in the surroundings, it exactly fitted and was spicy as I like it, lots of strong peppered curry, and sweet lentils; a piece of chilli from time to time and if it was too hot. . . killed the fire with onion and chappati. I had a nice “fast food”, and my stomach proved “reliable” as I drank water from the jug . . . . I know, here I can tell I am lucky having no problems with “exotic” food or water; I do not know if they had bottled beverages in that restaurant.
The surroundings were exotic too, as I could watch very close the cook and people walking or working on the street. Food and show in the same time!

Very informative and impressive page! Next time I'm in Delhi I'll use your tips to sightsee there! I have mixed feelings about the city, but I loved observing the floods of people flowing through Paharganj (Main Bazar), I felt like in a theatre;) Best!

Delhi's one fascinating, chaotic and historical city that I dont mind visiting again. Indeed, Old Delhi is the place to go for the real stuff and for enriching encounters with locals which are the spice of many travels. Great pages, Hermann!

With your tips and brilliant photos, you really conveyed the sense of chaos involved in exploring this amazing city! I almost felt right at home with you as I ate my Chicken Tikka Masala lunch that I cooked yesterday!
