There is a peninsula on the NW coast of Scotland that is so rural and wild that the road system couldn't be brought in. You can walk into it from the last road point 30 miles away, or take a 45 minute boat ride from nearby port town Mallaig Beg. The peninsula, Knoydart, is speckled with coastal settlements -- Doune, Airor, the Inverguiserain farm, and the largest settlement that qualifies as a village, Inverie. Inverie is home to the majority of the peninsula's 70 inhabitants, the post office/shop, the hostel, bunkhouse, and B&B, and the pub.
Here's what you need to know before you go:
1) It's remote and wild, but the people are amazing. They're (almost) all transplants, and they all have stories to tell and drinks to buy you.
2) The midges will eat you alive. Do your research, buy a net, bring repellant. At the end of the day despite your best efforts, you'll find them in your socks, hair, ears, and beer. But dinne worry, they'll ne drink much!
3) Be happy in your own head, because there isn't much to distract you out here. Miles and miles of the most beautiful country ever and some incredibly interesting people, but no cell phone reception, no TV in the pub, and iffy internet access.
4) In the summer, pre-book lodging unless you want to camp on Long Beach. But don't be afraid to camp on Long Beach, everyone does!
5) In the pub, the tourists sit in the dining area and the locals sit near the bar. Go sit with the locals. Really.
6) Things to do: Day -- hiking, hunting, hiking, wildlife tours (up the hill with the ranger, in the loch with the marine biologist), hiking, fishing, whale watching, drinking, hiking, and hiking. Unless you have or hire a boat, in which case that's an option too. Night -- craic in the pub, quiet dinner at the Pier House, keep to yourself on the beach somewhere looking at stars.
7) If you want to get away, that's the place to get. If you need to run away, that's the place to run. It'll change you and it'll heal you, if you let it and if you give it time. And you'll never forget it!

Really, the greatest danger is an accident (the place redefines rural) and bug bites (beware the midges!!) more travel advice

Thanks for sharing - it's one area I've been dying to visit and contemplating going this year.
