Torrington is located in one of the few agricultural parts of Wyoming and is the centre of the sugar beet industry. Both it and the surrounding countryside are rather different from anything else you’ll see in the state. But it also has a number of very reasonable motels and a great Mexican restaurant – what more does a traveller need?

And why go here? Well, it has a great location at the heart of one of the most historic parts of Wyoming. The Oregon Trail passed near here and just down the road at Guernsey you can stand in the ruts made by the pioneers’ wagons rolling past, and see where they carved their names and home towns in the soft rock.

Register Cliff

Also nearby is Register Cliff, where pioneers travelling west on the Oregon Trail would regularly stop and would carve their name and town of origin and are a moving and inspiring sight.

Fort Laramie

Fort Laramie too is just a short drive away, and has been restored to give a picture of life at this frontier outpost when the Trail was at its busiest. This whole area is definitely a great destination for history buffs.

Love your exterior shot of Fort Laramie with glowing aspen in the foreground, Sarah. Enjoying your account of the Oregon Trail, which we missed. Tough to beat good Mexican when on the road.

The Oregon Trail ruts and carvings are amazing - excellent tips Sarah! Torrington sounds just like the sort of small OTBP place that Sue and I would love. Thanks for this great page!

It was so cool to see names of people who came out West in the 1800's. I have to admire their spirit. It must have been a very difficult time for them.
