View from Spahn's B&B

The photo above was taken from the deck of Spahn’s Big Horn B & B , a beautiful log cabin home perched part way up the Big Horn Mountains to the west of Sheridan. This was my Sheridan experience.

We saw very little of the town itself, but in our two days here were fortunate enough to experience the remoter parts of the Big Horn and Pryor Mountains in the company of someone who loves and respects this area, Ron Spahn.

These mountains offer visitors something very different from the more famous Grand Tetons and Rockies further west: a sense of solitude and real wilderness that is missing from those more famous, and therefore more visited, destinations.

If you’re looking for the “real” Wyoming, whatever that is, you may just find it here.

You’ll need an off-road vehicle to visit some of the places in these tips, and a sense of adventure if you plan to explore on your own. A good map wouldn’t be a bad idea either!

By the way, the strange colour of the sky in this photo is caused by smoke from forest fires in Montana many miles to the north.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:The Big Horns could be the West you're searching for
  • Cons:You do need a vehicle to get around, preferably a tough one

This certainly does look like the Wild West! I love your lead photo especially.

Sorry to hear about the wildfires marring the sky clarity, Sarah. I had that my first time out there too. But what a find-a great place to stay run by an ex-ranger. Sounds like some great tours he ran too. I really want to go back this summer now!

Absolutely stupendous views of Bighorn Canyon! You and Chris certainly know how to do a proper trip! I'd love to experience some of that back-country myself, so thank you for this excellent tour.

Wow, what a magic part of Wyoming! This kind of log cabin is still my dream house and in such a wonderful surrounding I will go there one day and have guided tours with them. Bighorn Canyon... magic!

I'm still smiling about the Maverick Hotel! Your B & B experience was just wonderful as were the tours you took. Loved your "hidden photos" , especially the horses. Just wonderful stuff, Sarah.
