It has to be said that, were it not the chosen venue for VT’s 2008 Euromeet, I would possibly never have come to Karlsruhe. But I did – and I’m very pleased to have done so. There’s something about this city that really appealed to me. Was it the efficient tram system, which seemed to me to be an exemplary model of how public transport should operate? Was it the relatively few but very attractive historic buildings? Was it the greenery of its open spaces? The welcome in its cafés? The friendly “safe” atmosphere of a Saturday evening on its street? The high (or so again it seemed to me) proportion of young people?
Or was it most likely the combination of all of these, which added up to a strong sense of a city comfortable with itself – a city it was a pleasure to be part of for a few days at least and one in which I feel I might quite happily spend more time in future.

Of course in a few days (and with so much time taken up with socialising!) I wasn’t able to see a lot of what Karlsruhe has to offer, but what I saw I liked and have attempted to capture here in these few tips.
The travelogues meanwhile are a record of the VT meeting itself – time spent catching up with old friends and making new ones, eating and drinking (inevitably!) and exploring together – time that epitomised all that is best about VT. I hope you enjoy sharing it all with me.
The photo of me, Lori and Ingrid was taken by Hansi - thank you Hansi :)
If anyone who features in my photos would prefer not to, please let me know and I'll remove your picture - although I think everyone looks great and is obviously having a wonderful time :) |
