Bringing history to life

At Jamestown Settlement
Virginia is definitely a place to visit if you like history. Whether you’re more interested in the big events that shaped the world, or the daily lives of everyday people, you’ll find it here. For the former, visit Appomattox Court House to see where General R. E. Lee surrendered to Lt. General U. S. Grant, marking the end of the Civil War in 1865. For the latter, go to Jamestown Settlement or to Colonial Williamsburg, where modern-day interpreters re-create vividly the customs, occupations and daily worries and interests of the early settlers and their colonial successors.

Mabry Mill, Blue Ridge Parkway

Beautiful scenery

But Virginia is more than just history, having in the west the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, and in the east an equally lovely coastline. We combined our visit here with North Carolina and together or separately they make a great destination for a driving tour.

We were there back in July 2000 and I’m writing this in early 2007, so I should warn you that some things will have changed. However I’ve checked through the internet that all the things I’m recommending are still there, and the prices I quote are the up-to-date ones based on that research. But if anyone has been more recently and spots any mistakes, I’d be glad to hear from you and to make the corrections.

Great page on the historical attractions of Virginia. Particularly liked the details on what to expect and logistics like costs and getting there. Thanks for sharing.

Many years ago we were in this area and visited either Jamestown or Colonial Williamsburg - I can't remember which one. All I know is that I enjoyed the experience also. Nice page Sarah.
