"Italian charm" Spello by toonsarah

Spello Travel Guide: 17 reviews and 51 photos

Spello is not the most visited of Umbria’s hill towns, sandwiched as it is between well-publicised Montefalco and famous Assisi, but it has many charms and deserves at least a day of your time.

In fact, its relatively low number of visitors is a large part of its appeal, as tourists mingle in its streets with locals; galleries and craft shops jostle side by side with those selling everyday local produce; and tables in restaurants are easily come by.

For me the main pleasures here were simply strolling the streets and observing daily life on them; peering down the characteristic winding alleys and admiring the colourful flowers; relaxing over a leisurely lunch with friends and later with a delicious gelato; and admiring the wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.

But there a few specific sights to look out for too – enough to make you feel you have “done” Spello, but not so many as to make that doing into a chore. A church with marvellous Renaissance frescoes; an arch left over from Roman times; medieval walls and towers built on still-evident Roman foundations.

It is hard to imagine anywhere could more concisely capture the charms of Italy than does Spello, in fact.

What a lovely town Sarah! I love Gelati and the photo of yours looks pretty enticing. Great views! Love the walk you did along the narrow cobblestoned paths between the houses - lovely!

Sarah, lovely little page about this Italian gem. The Porta Consolare with the trees on top of it remind me a bit on the Torre Guinigi in Lucca. Interesting story about Santa Veronica here.

Another lovely Umbrian town! I liked the olive tree on the top of the tower and would enjoy strolling the charming narrow streets. If you visit Ljubljana I'll bring you to the place to taste frozen yoghurt ice cream with caramelized fig - my favourite :))

Hot & thirsty work..I must remember that the next time I'm in the mood for a little chocolate & lemon gelato.;) Not sure if God took the 1st photo but he certainly invented the world's greatest lens, the human eye-still not even remotely duplicated today!

A lovely new page on a town I had never heard of before. I never knew there was any such thing as a patron saint of photographers, but why not?
