View of Colca Canyon

From Arequipa it's easy to arrange a trip to the Colca Canyon, and well worth doing. You'll need to allow a couple of days at least, as an overnight stay is more or less essential if you want to see the condors.

And there's lots more to do apart from that. The landscape is spectacular in places and there are lots of walking trails. There are also plenty of small villages to visit where the traditional way of life is largely preserved, despite the influx of tourists.

Take swimwear with you so you can enjoy the hot springs near Chivay. And if you want somewhere a bit special to stay, see my tip about the Parador del Colca.

As well as the more dramatic scenery (Colca is deeper than the Grand Canyon!) you'll also find greener places, where the locals still farm on the terraces that date back to pre-Inca times. No tractors here, they just wouldn't be practical, so the fields are ploughed by oxen and there are donkeys to carry the heaviest loads.

Colca is such a beautiful place and I very much enjoyed my visit. We waited about two hours to see the condors but just before we left, several flew over the canyon :))

Lovely page, Sarah. I should go back to Peru and catch (some of) what I missed the first time. Thank you for sharing.
