As good as in the photos!

View of Machu Picchu
Everyone who goes to Peru has to see Machu Picchu. It was one of the last places we visited and I'd looked forward to seeing it a lot, so I was a bit worried that I might be disappointed, but I needn't have been. I've very rarely visited anywhere that looked so exactly like the pictures I'd seen - normally places seem either to look much better (because the photos just didn't do them justice) or more usually worse, because the pictures caught them from an impossible angle or on a rare lovely day or for some other mysterious reason. But Machu Picchu looked just as it should!

We caught the train from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, which is a good alternative to doing the Inca Trail if you're pushed for time or unable to cope with a trek. The route up is pretty - try to get a seat on the left-hand side of the carriage for the best views.

We went round with a group and guide at first, which was fine for getting the layout straight and hearing from her a bit more history than we'd read beforehand. After lunch we went back on our own and climbed up to the Caretaker's Hut, which was well worth the bit of effort it took. The views were great, and luckily for us the sun that had eluded us all morning came out and showed off the ruins at their best.

You're so right about that restaurant. It was a real struggle handing over 15 soles for a coke but we were just so thirsty! Love the orchid pictures too.

Excellent page and photos. What a lovely hotel. I would love it there among the hummingirds.
