For quintessential English countryside only a stone’s throw from London you could do far worse than visit East Sussex. This lovely county truly has a bit of everything – pretty villages and interesting towns, centuries of history, coastal scenery and rolling downlands.

|  | We’re lucky enough to have two sets of friends living here: Alex and Pete have a lovely old cottage in Battle (site of the famous 1066 Battle Of Hastings) while Paula and Kevin live in the seaside town of Hastings (which despite its name wasn’t the site of that famous battle!)
Because of this, we come here several times a year, so I'll try to keep this page updated regularly as we make new discoveries about this pretty corner of England.

I can't believe it's been over a quarter century since I last visited Hastings and Battle. When we were at Battle there was no audio guide, just a muddy field -- but my then ten-year-old son had been reading up on 1066, so he gave me his version. | volopolo Wed Oct 22, 2008 14:25 UTC
