Frequent Flyer miles to the rescue! Even though I blocked out vacation time on my calendar months ago, true to form I waited until fairly late in the game to book the trip. After some quality time with the Mileage plus folks at United and an Egyptian travel tour company, I crafted an itinerary that included a few days in London, York, and Edinburgh and then off to Egypt for a tour of the sites in Cairo and a cruise down the Nile. I was one click away from booking all the details, when the company handling the Egyptian leg informed me two weeks before travel that they couldn’t confirm my land accommodations…so whether or not I would get hotel rooms or a spot on the cruise ship was a crapshoot…typically that wouldn’t dissuade me, but several people advised me that flying by the seat of your pants is not the best way for a woman traveling alone to navigate Egypt. And given the exchange rate I couldn’t see spending more than a few days in the U.K.
So two weeks before departure day, I was back on the phone with United trying to figure out just how far I could get away given I had a limited amount of time to plan. Southeast Asia was a frontrunner since I love that part of the world. Several friends have raved about their time in Indonesia... and once the Mileage Plus folks told me a round trip ticket would only cost me a whopping $20 for airport taxes…I knew I had found my vacation spot.
I’m not much for planning vacations….my last trip I booked a outbound flight to Hanoi, two nights at a Hanoi B & B, and a return flight one month later, out of Bangkok and nothing else...that’s my favorite way to travel….so other then starting in Yogyakarta and ending at the Denpassar airport two weeks later, we’ll see where the spirit move me. |
