Since my grandparents were born in Donegal and moved back there around 12 years ago, I have been there more times than I can count. On all of these occasions I have stayed in a small town called Castlefin. Castlefin is a quiet, rural town with, admittedly, not much for young people to do. However, the 'Diamond', as it is locally known, acts as the centrepoint of the town, and is a nice place to sit if the weather is nice. It is surrounded by pubs, most notably the authentically Irish 'old man' s pub' Tinney's, where I am told my grandfather bought everyone a drink upon hearing of my birth! I have also travelled around Donegal, and indeed into Northern Ireland. No doubt the place has a special claim on my heart given my connection to it, but it is a charming place with beautiful scenery and plenty of good pubs!

• Pros:Lots of pubs!
• Cons:Not so convenient for non-drivers.
• In a nutshell:The welcome will be warm even if the weather isn't!
