Things To Do: Chinsptrap pengiuns nesting
  • Tip Rating:
  • You would think that watching a penguin sitting on a pile of rocks wouldn't be that exciting, but I could do this for hours if I wasnt at risk of frost bite. The male penguins constantly steal rocks from other nests to give to their partners.

Things To Do: Seeing Antarctica for the first time
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nothing is as exciting as seeing the antarctic mainland for the first time (except seeing your first penguin) after several bumpy days crossing the drake passage.

  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Life in atarctica is about survival of the fittest. Penguin eggs make a tasty snack for predatory birds such as the skua.

Things To Do: Defending the nest.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Skuas are very persistant in their quest for penguin eggs, every few minutes they would swoop down and try and catch a penguin nest unguarded. This would be greeted by loud crys of alarm by the nesting penguins and agitated flapping of wings until the pesky Skua gave up

Things To Do: I think I can, I think I can
  • Tip Rating:
  • Penguins have reason to be hesitiant in being the first to dive into the water because there may be a leopard seal waiting for lunch. Penguins rely on the safety in numbers principle, but someone has to go first and they are at most rsik of being eaten. Groups of up to a hundred penguins can spend up to 15 minutes just running up and down the shore line waiting for some one to get the courage to go first.

Things To Do: Rule # 1The five metre rule
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • We were told that when in the penguin colonies we were to saty at least 5 metres away fromt he animals, the only problem was that nobody told them.

Things To Do: Rule # 2 Stay out of the penguins path
  • Tip Rating:
  • The theory is that we are not to alter the penguins behaviour in any way so if they are walking (waddling, belly sliding) from A to B you are not to get in their way and cause them to change course. The only problem is that after watching the penguins for a while you come to the conlcusion that they have absolutely no idea where they want to go and never go in a straight line anywhere.
