La piedra parece que cobra vida , en cualquier esquina se puede ver una figura , una cruz , una concha de peregrino, una pórtico ... auténticas obras de arte que te alegraran el alma y los sentidos

La Catedral está dedicada a Santiago Apostol que según la " leyenda" vino a España a predicar el Evangelio , y al volver a Palestina , en el año 44 , fue decapitado por herodes Agripa que prohibió que fuese enterrado . Sus discípulos depositaron sus restos en un sepulcro de marmol que estaba en un barco y que navegando , sin tripulación , llegó hasta la costa Gallega donde fue enterrado .
Su tumba fue olvidada hasta el año 813 , en que el ermita Pelayo , observó luces y cánticos , que llamaría Campo de la Estrella ( campus stellae ) y es de donde proviene el nombre de Compostela
A partir de aquí el Rey Alfonso II proclamó al apóstol Santiago patrono del Reino e inició la construcción de un Santuario que con los años llegaría a ser la actual Catedral
Dentro de la Catedral con planta de Cruz latina , se puede ver sepulcro del santo , ver sus tesoros , el botafumeiro , pasear por sus naves visitando el Altar Mayor , los laterales y como no , dándole al final , un abrazo al Santo

El mercado de abastos / The market

Es una parte de Santiago en la que vale la pena dar un paseo , para ver sus gentes , sus instalaciones o para comprarte unos pimientos de Padrón , flores , un queso de tetilla o ....
Temprano vienen las aldeanas de la zona a vender sus productos e instalan sus puestos con los productos de su huerta o los que elaboran en casa , lo que da un colorido y un interés adicional a este mercado
El mercado está alrededor de la capilla de San Fiz de Solovio , en unas naves de piedra y en los puestos que se colocan alrededor

It is part of the Santiago that worth a stroll, to see its people, its facilities or to buy some peppers from Padrón, flowers , a teat cheese or....
Early in the morning the local peasants come to sell their products and install their stalls with their farm products or those produced at home, giving a colorful and an additional interest to this market

Sotas de la baraja - Jacks in the deck

Al final del "camino" y ya en la plaza del Obradoiro entre El Parador de los Reyes Católicos y el ayuntamiento , está la Iglesia de San Fructuoso , hecha de estilo compostelano con la torre en el centro de la fachada .Su decoración está centrada en la parte superior pues se ve desde la Plaza del Obradoiro .
Hay una hornacina con la Virgen de las Angustias , el escudo de España y las cuatro virtudes cardenales están en la parte superior del templo . Popularmente se las llama las sotas de la baraja , pues recuerdan a las cuatro sotas de la baraja Española ( oros , copas , espadas y bastos ) y dicen que esto fue obra del arquitecyto que no estaba contento los dineros que le habían dado

Catedral - Cathedral " Botafumeiro " Cathedral Review

Los peregrinos llegaban a la catedral después de meses de caminar y como las condiciones higiénicas no eran las mejores , para evitar los malos olores decidieron aromatizar el ambiente con un incensario .
El botafumeiro de 50kgs de peso y 1,5m de alto, se instaló en el centro de la nave central , delante del altar mayor a 28m de altura y desde allí se balancea de nave a nave esparciendo su olor a incienso .
Son necesarios ocho hombres tirando de las sogas para mover el Botafumeiro
Se le puede ver en movimiento , en las grandes ocasiones , en la misa del peregino ( a las 12 ) o incluso si hay un grupo puede solicitar que lo muevan durante una misa pagando una cierta cantidad
Es impresionante !!!
The pilgrims arrived at the cathedral after months of walking and the hygienic conditions were not the best, to avoid odors they decided to flavore the atmosphere with incense.
The "Botafumeiro" , 50kgs of weight and 1.5 m high, was installed at the centre of the nave in front of the Mayor altar at 28m high and then swinging from bay to bay spreading its scent of incense.
Eight men are needed to pull the ropes to move the Botafumeiro
It can be seen moving in big the occasions, the pilgrim mass (at 12h ) or even if there is a group that can request that they move during mass by paying a certain amount

Las "ruas" , calles estrechas y empedradas son el sitio ideal para darse un paseo a primera hora de la mañana , cuando la ciudad aún no se ha despertado y puedes perderte por las calles adoquinadas sorprendiéndote cada vez que doblas una esquina
Los nombres de sus calles son melosos como Galicia
The "Ruas, narrow cobbled streets are the ideal place to take a walk first thing in the morning, when the city has yet to be awakened and you can loose on the cobbled streets beeing surprised every time you turn a corner .
The street names are sweet as Galicia

Plaza del Obradoiro

La plaza del Obradoiro es una joya y está en el corazón de la ciudad de Santiago de Compostela.
( Recibe su nombre de los talleres de los canteros que hubo allí durante su construcción ).
Sus grandes dimensiones y los edificios que la rodean , hacen que valga la pena dedicarle algún tiempo y lo que se puede hacer es simplemente sentarse a ver los edificios , el paso de la gente y la llegada de los emocionados peregrinos
La Catedral de Santiago , el Museo y el Palacio de Gelmírez están al este de la Plaza , al Norte está el Hostal de los Reyes Católicos ,que originalmente fue un refugio de peregrinos y ahora es un Parador de turismo , al Oeste está el Palacio de Rajoy donde se aloja el Ayuntamiento de Santiago y al Sur está el Rectorado de la Universidad en el Colegio de San jerónimo


La plaza del Obradoiro is a gem and is at the heart of the city of Santiago de Compostela.
(It takes its name from the workshops of the stone workers that were there during its construction).
Its large size and the buildings surrounding it, make it worthwhile to spend some time there and what you can do is just sit down and watch the buildings, the passage of people and the arrival of excited pilgrims
