Amsterdam! A mecca for the open minded

by benvalo - last update: Jul 24, 2005

Canal next to Damrak
Since my first trip to Amsterdam, with several friends, about 3 and a half years ago I have been in love with this city and the laid back life style apparent when you walk the streets.

I have now made 4 trips all together with another 3 night stay booked up from 5 September to 8 September.

I do plan on making as many trips as possible in the future, at least until the initial buzz wears off ~ if that is even possible!!

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is widley know for it's liberal views on soft drugs and prostitution - people who share these views will certainly agree that this place is a Mecca for them; of course not everyone visit's Amsterdam for the cannabis selling coffeeshops or the lustriuos Red Light District, and these people are open minded to see the city more for what it REALLY is....one of the world's leading 'free' societies.

In order to try and lower the amount of heavy drug users in the Netherlands, back in the 70's, the Dutch government introduced relaxed laws allowing licensed 'coffeeshops' to sell marijuana and hash (known as soft drugs). They wanted to severely cut down the use of hard drugs (such as cocaine and heroin) and thought by controlling the sale of the soft drugs this will cut down any the criminal ring.
Visit my Amsterdam page for more coffeeshop info
