I had wanted to visit Egypt since I was small and always tried to plan a holiday there with friends but somehow the plans never quite worked out so I decided eventually to go there alone and had one of the best holidays I’ve ever had; every time I look at the photos, I remember how much I enjoyed being there, wandering around, gazing at the huge number of amazing monuments that have stood here for so many centuries and fascinated so many people during that time.

The last day of my stay in Luxor coincided with the tragic shooting of tourists visiting the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut and I can only hope that those killed had enjoyed the last days of their life as much as I had enjoyed my time in the town up to that point. I also felt very much for the many lovely people I’d met in Luxor whose livelihood was dependant on the tourist industry and who must have been scared themselves but still looked out to help those visiting their country, as much as possible.
