Favorite Thing: There are many tour operators in Vietnam. With the advancement of technology, you can do all the booking through the Internet instead of making your way to your friendly neighbourhood tour agency. I am not saying your hometown agencies are not good. Basically, they will help you do all the bookings and when you reach Vietnam, you will be received by the local operator and you join the main group (with tourists from other countries) and travel around in a big big group. Trust me, during my tour, I met really big groups of 50 people.
As I am travelling solo, our agencies in Singapore are not favourable to do my business. The requirement for all those tour packages must have "two pax to go". Hence, I decided to source for a Vietnam tour agency who can help me during my stay there. What I do is to get the tickets from Singapore.
A good recommendation is Huong Giang Travel at http://www.charmingvietnam.com What I like is the customer service and prompt reply. The agency is able to customised a suitable programme according to your needs. They are very patient with my silly questions as I do not know Vietnam well. One thing I notice, if you are travelling in pairs or small groups, it's good to do a private tour. You can cover more places and the price you pay is very reasonable, comparable to those big groups you see on the street. You have a designated driver and guide to your group. You go more places and you do not have to end up waiting at wee hours in the morning if you want to travel to places like Mekong Delta or Cu Chi Tunnels. I was told that tourists in those group has to depart by 7.30am for Mekong Delta. For me, I can have a longer sleep and depart at 8.30am.
Lonely Planet has a good list of reputed agencies too. Have fun doing research!
