Getting TO/AROUND: Contrary to what many VTers believe, I visited Bangkok on an AEROPLANE and not on my little dinghy. My little dinghy would not be able to brave the rough sea out there to get me from Singapore to Bangkok. Also, my little boat is licensed to sail in Singapore waters and not elsewhere.

Well, the best mode of transport to BKK is still aeroplane. I would strongly encourage you to try the national airline - Thai Airways when visiting BKK. You have a choice of many arrival and departure times and the price of ticket is reasonable. Service is good and the new airplane is comfortable with lots of leg room for the economy class.

Visit www.zuji.com.sg for the best prices in town and they are able to personally deliver the tix to you free of charge!

Don Muang Airport (domestic flights): Be Early Than Be Sorry

  • Bangkok Don Muang Airport (domestic flights)
  • It can get pretty crowded...

Getting TO/AROUND: It always pay to be early than to be late. Try to reach the airport early as it can get a bit crowded during peak hours. In addition, if you are claiming VAT, you need additional time to complete all these tasks. Remember, these are the things you need to do at the airport:

    1. Get your goods inspected and acknowledged at the VAT office outside the immigration hall.
    2. Check-in at your designated airline.
    3. Pay airport tax either at the service counters or automated machines.
    4. Go through the immigration hall (the queue can be long here)
    5. Visit the VAT office inside the airport to claim your cash.
    6. If you still have time, happy shopping at the airport mall.
    7. Home Sweet Home :)

If you are staying in the Siam area, try to start your journey about 2.5hr (during peak hours) before your flight departure. It pays to be early!

Getting TO/AROUND: Bangkok is a haven for the shoppers but do bear in mind, no matter how much you have spent, always leave the last 500 baht for paying airport tax at the Bangkok International Airport!!!

Before you enter the immigration hall, you will see rows of automated machines and service counters for the tax payment. It's your preference on the mode of payment - either through the automated machines or service counters.

Upon your payment, keep the voucher and present it at the entrance to the immigration hall. Just remember to leave your last 500B note for going home! *wink*

BTS Skytrain: What a way to zip around the city!

Getting TO/AROUND: BTS Skytrain - without you, I don't think I can enjoy my stay in Bangkok that much! The BTS Skytrain is the coolest mode of transport in town, with this, you can beat all traffic and zip around the city and shop to your heart's content!

Since December 1999, it has literally transformed the face of public transportation in the Thai capital. For the first time, there is a new mode of transport offering both residents and tourists a comfortable ride through central Bangkok - lifting us above the chronic congestion, noise and pollution of the streets below!

For tourists, you can choose to purchase the 100 Baht one-day pass that gives you unlimited ride for one day. That's what I did and it certainly makes my day in Bangkok!

The trains run daily between 6:00 am and 12:00 midnight with frequent service throughout the day. The fare is based on the distance travelled and starts from 10 baht.

Getting TO/AROUND: Baby, this is no chip for hitting jackpot! Believe me or not, this token is used for taking a train ride on the Mass Rapid Transit or MRT for short.

Bangkok is well-served by public transport, especially the BTS. However, the BTS could not reach all areas and at times, certain locations are served by the MRT, which runs in the underground.

To travel from Siam Square to Suan Lum Night Market, I have to take the BTS from the Siam BTS station to Sala Daeng BTS station. Exiting from Sala Daeng BTS station, take a short walk through the well-guided walkway to the Lumphini MRT station in the underground. The MRT is fast and comfortable and you hit your destination in no time! Try it today!

River and Canal Boats: Visit Bangkok with Chao Phraya Express Boat

  • Have a great cruise in Bangkok!

    Category: Ship/Boat
Getting TO/AROUND: One of the best way to visit the wonders of Thailand is to take the Chao Phraya Express Boat at the Central Pier. Just take the BTS and alight at the Saphan Takin BTS station. Remember, follow the signage that says "Chao Phraya Express" - otherwise you would ended up at other parts of the pier!

The Chao Phraya Express has a comprehensive coverage of the river route. The boat is able to take you to all the wonders in Bangkok such as Grand Palace and Wat Po. If you are not sure, why not buy the 100 baht one-day pass and you have unlimited rides for the day on the boat? *grin* Upon purchasing the one-day pass, you will be given a free guide for the river cruise (please read it onboard so that you are able to know the various attractions during your journey!) and a bottle of mineral water (you really need it under this hot, hot, hot weather!!!). And... hold on, the service officer at the counter will also stick a "VIP" tourist tag on your t-shirt/blouse. You will be given the royal treatment onboard (nah.... the boat conductor would not bother you when he/she sees the tag). By the way, that's the same tag I wore during my walking trip from Grand Palace and Wat Po that attracted unnecessary attention!!!

The ride is cool and have fun! Remember to absorb in the sights and sounds along the way. Sit back and relax!

Re Suan Lum Night Bazaar. It's not pronounced see-lom, it's soon-lum. Silom (see-lom) is nearby, but a completely different place.
