The famous Similan Islands incorporates a string of beautiful islands and also world's top ten diving spots. Huge granite rock formations plunge into the sea and form the various sea reefs, dive-throughs and seamounts for fans of diving.
Similan Islands refer to Nine Islands - literally meaning there are nine islands in the region. "Similan" comes from the Malay word "sembilan", meaning nine. Counting from the north, they are Ko Bon, Ko Ba-Ngu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang (two islands), Ko Payan, Ko Payang and Ko Hu Yong. They are small islands with crystal waters and clear white sand. Of the nine islands, Ko Miang is a favourite spot for visitors who want to unwind on the white powdered beach or enjoy the beautiful sea life through snorkelling.
You can take a boat from the Thap Lamu Pier to visit the islands. Do note that the pier is about 1 hour drive from the airport and 1.5 hour drive from Patong Beach. The national park is only opened from Nov - May. The best time to dive here is Mar, according to the divemasters.Personally, I like the dive spot at Ko Bon the best. The conditions are less challenging than other sites in Similans and here, I saw a white and black manta rays!
