who is singapore? | running singapore - a view from the distance |
For the craziness of life, I just happened to moved to Singapore for 2 months... It’s super crazy to be here, is a very interesting city. Singapore has a stormy history: it was an English colony at first, then it was took by Japan, the Americans "saved" them, come back under the British until they finally become independent in the 60s... 75% of the population are Chinese and they also have a high amount of people of Malaysia, Arabia and Europe or other parts of the world, with which is a total mix of languages and colors of skin along the street...and of course, FOOD! You can find almost any kind of food here, it’s amazing… They have 4 official languages, one of them being English, which makes things easier for tourism and business, but if you walk along the street are able to listen something like 54 different languages (that are the ones that are spoken here. ..) If you go to Chinatown, you can see an Indian temple in the middle of the Chinatown, right across the street from a Christian church... YES!! It’s a huge mix! It’s great!
The tropical weather is not exactly friendly with the lunch-time runners… The first week Mark and I tried to run at noon and we almost die! After 30 minutes we’ve decided to go for a nice 2 hours-walk instead (and then hit the gym when we come back)
The joke here is that “Singapore is a fine city”, they fine you from pee on the street to throw the cigarette butt to the street, or by cross the street in a place where there is not path… An insanity for me, since I’m not used to so much control, but the results are magnificent: is one of the cleanest cities in the world... and the people is super respectful.. In the 1996 there was a called bell “SMILE!” where the government was asking people to smile always, mainly to tourists. The idea was to make the tourist feel good with the hope that they will return... the add concluded “if you smile, everybody wins” Hey! I think like it worked! Everybody smiles all the time… and the tourism is a growing industry |
