The Walled City of Dubrovnik Made To Last

The Old City, Dubrovnik
I have known some Croatians for many years but had never thought of visiting their country until I saw the television coverage during the 1990's and realised the beauty of Dubrovnik and the coastal districts. We arrived in Dubrovnik early October 2005 and were instantly in love with the walled city , the people , the sparkling ocean and warm sun.
We had 4 days to enjoy the city, to walk the great city walls (twice), to visit the island of Lokrum, to take a day trip to the nearby town of Cavtat, and just relax on the beach at our Hotel in Babin Kuk.
Tour Boat Outside Dubrovnik Harbour

Water Everywhere, You Must Take A Ferry

Dubrovnik is famous for its clear ocean, small islands and bays and marinas crammed with boats of all sizes. Take a ferry ride around the walled city and onto an island, the view from the ocean is magnificent. We went to the nearest island Lokrum which is about 20 minutes from the old harbour and intended to stay on the island for a few hours, but cut short by a storm and we had to return to the ferry for shelter. If you do not want to take the ferry walk to Lapad and amble along the esplanade for a great view of Gruz Port.

Visit Nearby Towns on Local Bus or Ferry

The coast is dotted with beautiful little towns. A good experience is to catch the local bus to Cavtat about a 40 minute bus ride. The ride is an experience just seeing the local people on and off and then you reach Cavtat where you can walk the esplanade and enjoy lunch at one of the many cafes. This photo was taken from the bus as we left Dubrovnik for Cavtat.

I can't believe it's been almost a year since we were in Dubrovnik; sailing into and out of port was one of the highlights of our cruise. Thanks for the memories :o)
