"A Step Back In Time" Pompeii by Mikebb
Pompeii Travel Guide: 980 reviews and 2,702 photos
Pompeii stands on a plateau which was originally formed by a volcanic lava flow and covers an area of 60 hectares on which the town was established . There had not been any evidence of volcanic activity from Mount Vesuvius since the second millennium BC and over the centuries a very wealthy town had been established until it ended on a disasterous day in 79 AD.
You can walk the ruins without a guide and save a few dollars however you will not enjoy your visit as much. A good guide gives you the history and a little more on each building and temple. We were lucky in securing an experienced guide who loved his work, although fairly old he was a vigorous walker and a very good commentator. We had 9 weeks in Europe and he was the best local guide we encountered.
Rain had been following us for the last 10 days and it caught us during this tour. Nothing much, we had grown used to it and after 10 minutes it stopped and the ruins looked no different.
- Pros:This is better than any museum
- Cons:A little wet
- In a nutshell:Need to return

Just awesome Mike! This place is on my bucket list! The floor mural of the dog is beautiful. Although the loss of the life was so tragic, they left the world a treasure. What a beautiful place still. Excellent page!

Absolutely fascinating page on Pompeii. The Frescoes are so vivid. The baths area was also very interesting.
