We took a day visit to Colmar during the last days of August 2012. We booked 4 nights accommodation in Strasbourg with the intention of visiting other towns within the Alsace region.

We attempted to join a day bus tour that included Colmar and several wineries, but found the tours fully booked and then decided to do it by ourselves. As it often happens, disappointment turns into joy as we had a most wonderful day.

The regular train service took approximately one hour from Strasbourg to Colmar, and with window seats we enjoyed the countryside.

Colmar is well signposted and we decided not to wait for the local bus and walk the km to the old town. An easy walk mostly through parks, but one could have walked on the paved footpath.

On entering the old town we were amazed at the amount of old buildings retained, just streets and streets of double story houses and buildings, all well preserved, wooden beams showing everywhere. Many buildings are from the 15th century or earlier. The old Tanneries have been converted into beautiful buildings retaining most of the original features.

Our day trip to Colmar was the best day of our visit.

I haven't been back to Colmar for many years, so I enjoyed reading about your visit and looking at your photos. I have the impression that Colmar has (fortunately!) not changed much in the intervening decades, except that they didn't have such good maps and signposting back then.

Thanks Don, our day trip to Colmar is one of the best we have had in Europe, so much has been preserved within the Old Town, and very easy to walk around.

great looking village, love the carrousel, and the opening image is beautiful. glad to know the guy who designed the statue of liberty is remembered in his home town. and the best part is the coffee shoop - so european. fun reading.

Mike, excellent little page about your day trip to Colmar. Although this region is relatively close to where I live, I neither really visited Strassburg nor Colmar.

Love the pics on your intro page :o) Colmar looks like a beautiful and fairly compact city, ideal for a daytrip indeed!
