Adelaide River Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 110 photos

Our visit to Adelaide River was limited to 90 minutes as we were on our way to Katherine. Time enough to see this small town of 240 residents , to enjoy some food and refreshments at the Adelaide River Inn and then visit the War Cemetery.

The town is located on the Stuart Highway 112km south of Darwin. The area was originally inhabited by the Kungarakan and Warai Aboriginal clans. The first European settlement was established in 1870 as a base for workers on the construction of the Overhead Telegraph Line.

World War II Military Base

During 1939 a huge military base was located in Adelaide River with the 119 Australian General Hospital, army camps and thousands of service personnel stationed in the town and surrounding areas.

Following the bombing of Darwin in 1942, Australian and American military headquarters were relocated from Darwin to the Adelaide River township.

World War II Cemetery

The town now maintains the third largest war cemetery in Australia. This would be the major attraction of the town.
