  • We were a group of 34 orchid enthusiasts visiting Thailand and our tour included a visit to the Bangkok Flower Market. The only flowers at the market were Orchids, mostly Dendrobiums of all colours. The market sells flowers all over the world and generally the flowers are delivered to the world capital cities within 24 hours. It was interesting to see how they grade and arrange the flowers, it is all done manually, and then pack for delivery. You have most likely seen these flowers in your hometown, in the local florist, hospital, hotel reception etc.

We were taken on a tour of the market, this included the laboratory where they create orchids from seed within a sterile enviroment. These seedlings are germinated in a flask ( usually a Johnny Walker Scotch shaped bottle) and several months later, sometimes longer, usually go through another process known as replating whereby they are removed from the original flask and transferred into a fresh medium in a new flask. Again this is done in a sterile laboratory as the small plants are very suspect to fungus. This process helps protect Orchids in the Wild from extermination.
