A Garden Town Outside of Toronto- A Place to Relax

If while visiting Toronto you get the urge to get away from it all, consider heading east to the Durham region to Whitby town. The GO train will take you there or drive along the 401 or 407 east of the city.

In Whitby the pace slows down and people become friendlier. You can stroll the streets and see gardens and historical homes, or go into the shops and talk to shopkeepers who are more than happy to share a conversation... or get out of town for a fabulous day nearby. There are so many trails to explore and country roads to travel that it would be silly to try to begin to tell you more about them. Consider going to Port Perry or the Rouge Valley. You won't regret it, especially if you come when the weather is pleasant (late May to October).

EATING OUT

I can personally recommend the Bella Notte Ristorante on Brock St., south of Taunton, for fine Italian dining. I hear that Brothers Restaurant in Whitby is good and I can testify to Bayly's at 1235 Bayly St. in Pickering as one of the best Greek restaurants in southern Ontario. If you care to go to Port Perry, a nice day trip, there is a really decent fish and chips place you should check out if you like to eat fish & chips. It is called Captain George's Fish & Chips, on the main street. There are other Captain George's in the region, but you would do well to ignore them and go straight to Port Perry.
