The island of Kauai is known as the Garden Island. It is a lush tropical island, basically round in shape, with mountain peaks in the center and white sand beaches dotting the shorelines. The highest peak on the island, Mount Waialeale, has the highest rainfall in the state, and at times in the world. This high level of rainfall not only keeps the island green, but has carved the beautiful Waimea Canyon on the south side of the island. Although it is not as large as the Grand Canyon, many say it is just as beautiful, with steep canyon walls of green, orange and red, changing colors as the sun hits it at different angles throughout the day. This is a rural island, with lots of scenic beauty but not much else to do. If you're looking for action and adventure, look elsewhere. It's a great place to kick back, relax, and explore the beauty of nature.
