"In the heart of Shenandoah Valley" New Market by matcrazy1
New Market Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 29 photos
I stopped in New Market on the way from Harrisonburg to fantastic caverns in Luray. It is a little rural town located in the narrowest point of the Shenandoah Valley.
This was a strategic point in the Civil War. On May 15, 1864, New Market was the site of the Battle of New Market - a battle in the Valley Campaigns of 1864 in the American Civil War. Teenage students from the Virginia Military Institute fought alongside the Confederate Army and forced Union General Franz Sigel and his army out of the Shenandoah Valley. This event is commemorated in New Market Battlefield State Historical Park but I didn't visit it.
In the early morning I took a walk along main and empty street of the historic downtown and looked at houses decorated before incoming Halloween.
Then I hit my car towards the Blue Ridge Mountains and crossed the George Washington National Forest. I didn't see anything more than thick fog in the mountains.
- Pros:Historic buildings, atmosphere, peace and quiet, mountains around
- Cons:Thick fog in the mountains.
- In a nutshell:Do not skip small towns! They are beautiful!

So glad you take the time to observe the simple ordinary towns and lifestyles when you travel. This is the true culture of a place. sorry you had so much fog. Bet it's lovely in good weather.
What a shame that it was to foggu to fully enjoy your visit here. Better luck next time!
I am so glad you got to see little towns like this. Some town may appear to have nothing of interest, but when explorers like ourselves will always find something wonderful!
Great to see the Halloween decorations here. Nice small town page.
Delightful small town with that southern Americana feel to it. Great travelogues.
Matt, I think that we have similar tastes when it comes to travelling. Finding little off-the-beaten-path places like this is what makes life interesting! Nice T'logue on the Halloween preparations too!
