Off The Beaten Path: Is it Matt?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Look at the architectural details of the baroque facade of the basilica.
The side areas of the facade place richly framed niches with the statues of four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) dated from 1867-1873. Which one of them is on my picture? Matt??? Do you know?

  • I found this house on my picture beneath the basilica and Paradise Square, at the north, on so called the Pilgrimage Square (Fair Square). The square is closed with four two-storey buildings equipped with wooden balconies on the first floor level built by Jozef Czartoryski around 1715. They looked amazing.

Off The Beaten Path: Flowers on balconies
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wooden balconies of houses at the Pilgrimage Square (Fair Square) were full of flowers as on my picture. I very rarely saw so many flowers at one house. I liked them a lot. Isn't it a good idea for my/your balcony?

  • Houses at the Pilgrimage Square (Fair Square) had small frontyards full of flowers and small decorative trees. I liked it a lot. Wooden balconies in flowers with beautiful tiny frontyards below - very unique and beatiful, I think.

Off The Beaten Path: Was he from Texas?
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the front the Paradise Square in front of facade of the basilica is closed with an iron balustrade. There are ten stone posts, which support stone figures of saints created by Tomasz Galuszczynski in 1823 there.

This one on my picture had a hat. We were joking with Kathy (Kodi01) that he must be from Texas. Is it Texican hat? I am not sure :-).

    Off The Beaten Path: Altars
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many altars inside Our Lady of the Angels? Basilica. Except the main altar located at presbyterium at the end of the main, wide nave there are 9 as I remember smaller altars dedicated to various saints located on the northern and southern walls of the basilica and on the rood arch wall.
Don't miss them, some of them look amazing.

Off The Beaten Path: Decorations and a pulpit
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walls of Our Lady of the Angels' Basilica are highly decorated, it's Baroque! Look at the pulpit hanging on the wall on my picture.
A pulpit is a raised place in a church, with steps leading up to it (where are they?), from which the priest speaks to the worshippers.

  • We were lucky to enter sacristy (vestry). The entrance door was opened, we came inside and asked the priest whether we could take some pictures. He smiled and allowed us to see and take pictures inside.
Surely there were a lot of different special clothes priests wear for church ceremonies.

Off The Beaten Path: Sacristy (vestry)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Small sacristy (vestry) of Our Lady of the Angels' Basilica is adjoined by The Chapel of Immaculate Conception of the BVM (formerly called Bracka) at the southern wall of the nave founded in 1749.

Sacristy (vestry) is a room in a church, especially one in which priests and the group of people who sing in church put on the special clothes they wear for church ceremonies, and in which items used in church ceremonies are sometimes kept.

  • There is a small altar in the sacristy (vestry) of Our Lady of the Angels' Basilica. Look at the old wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ on the cross in the middle of the altar. There are portraits of pope John Paul II and his friend Franciszek Macharski, arcibishop of Krakow on both sides of the altar.

Ignorant me! How did I miss Kalwaria until now? Always thought that Czestochowa is the most important pilgrimage site in Poland, but now I understand that there is much more. Thanks for this fantastic tour, Matt.

Matt, what a massive page with loads of interesting photos. I quite like the Polish red Poczta boxes. Perhaps I should take this place into account for a possible daytrip from Krakow if I ever go there again. *winkygrin*

Nice page! Pitty I wasnt her when I was in Krakow, maybe another time. Do you know, Vilnius has Kalwaria as well, but a bit smaller ;) Raimis.

What about shops selling fernitures, Matt? When I last visited Kalwaria every second shop sold fernitures... :) Anyway, great overview... Made me want to visit the town again... :)
