    • We drove to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska from Krakow late afternoon - before sunset on rainy, business day and despite of it we noticed a few buses full of people.

    Walking from the parking lot we noticed the huge, impressive building of the basilica, located on the top of the hill.

    Directions: From Krakow drive E77 16 km (10 mi) southwards (direction: Chyzne, Zakopane), take exit to Highway 96 (direction Bielsko-Biala), turn left (follow the direction sign) in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, drive a few kilometers up to the hill.

    • We came in internal courtyard. There was empty square looking a little mysterious with galleries around its three sides. The only sounds came from birds and steps of a few monks and priests walking there.

    • Cloisters are covered stone passages around the four sides of a courtyard especially in a religious building such as church or monastery.
    Look at cloisters around three sides of the courtyard of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska monastery - mysterious acoustics and echo there, believe me.

    • The monastery was renovated recently. The cloisters are covered by red roof tiles and look very nice now. They surround courtyard on its three sides.The Our Lady of the Angels' Basilica wall forms the fourth side of the courtyard.

    • There are fourteen Baroque style confessionals from the middle 19th century in the Cloisters. And there is the Way of the Cross stations with pictures by Brother Kasper Szybala from around 1640, at which Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, today’s Pope John Paul II, prayed many times.

    • We noticed two Polish national flags waving on the wall of the Basilica which formed the fourth side of the court. Polish national flag is simple: red and white (reverse the colors to get... Indonesia and Monaco flag :-).
    The door on the wall was closed. Surely I had to check it :-).

    • There was commerating table on the wall of the courtyard: 1940 - in memory of victims of NKWD terror (Soviet secret political police). Btw did you know that more Poles were killed (or lost) by Stalin than Nazi terror?
    Hmm... it was forbiden to say it before 1989.

    Surely I took a picture of Kathy between two Poland's flags there.

    • From the west and from the north the Basilica is surrounded by the so-called the way of the Cross Cloisters. They were erected as defence walls with bastions (1624-1632) and turned into priestly rooms in 1747. The square within the Cloisters was a graveyard in the past.

    • We noticed this cross on my picture and commerating table on a wall of the courtyard of the monastery. This wall is a wall of the Basilica as well. There were some famous priests and monks burried at this place in the past.

    • There is a vast square called the Paradise Square framed with cloisters dating from 1823 and 1834 at the north and the south. It's located in front of the Basilica facade.
    The cloisters hold confessionals from the middle of the 19th century.
