Chimera salad bar inside

"Chimera" salad bar: The largest and the best salad bar 2 Chimera Review

.
"Chimera" salad bar is the first, largest and most popular salad bar in Krakow.
.
In summer you can eat (including meals from the restaurant) in a garden, which is open until late in the evening, and where you can listen to live music by candlelight.
.
Every Sunday (except during the summer holidays) at 12.00 they have a special theatre performance for children.
.
They are also open for breakfast every day of the week. You can choose from selection of cold meats, cheese, butter, bread, fruit juice and coffee or tea; or muesli, cornflakes with fruit and yoghurt, toast, eggs Viennese or scrambled eggs, and cakes.
.

Favorite Dish: .
Choose your favourite (fixed) salad - I like various (already didn't taste all haha).
Or get a plate (small for 7PLN or big for 10 PLN) and mix salads which you like from buffet.
Bread and sauces (mayonese, youghurt, spicy and mild vinegarette) complimentary (= no more $ :-).
1Euro=1US$=4PLN (approx.).
.

Address: 3 Sw. Anny Street, 31-008 Krakow

Stairs to "Chimera" salad bar - Krakow

Stairs to "Chimera" salad bar

"Chimera" salad bar: The largest and the best salad bar 1 Chimera Review

.
"Chimera" salad bar is situated in renovated medieval cellars, where in winter it is a treat to sit and feel the warmth of the open fire and enjoy your meal, chosen from 40 different kinds of salads.
.
How to get there?
When you enter the gate walk maybe 10-20 steps (depends on how long are your legs and how much are you amused after drinks) and turn left to glass doors and go downstairs to get inside (look at the picture).
.
Attention: sometimes it's over-crowded, no free tables - hmm... where to eat then? Do you like "standing eating"?
.

Entrance to Chimera (Sw Anny Street) - Krakow

Entrance to Chimera (Sw Anny Street)

Chimera Restaurant: Exclusive restaurant with reasonable prices Chimera Review

.
The chimera of Greek myth is the offspring of Echinda and Typhon. From the Greek meaning "she-goat" the Chimera is a fire breathing creature that has the body of a goat, the head of a lion and the tail of a serpent. Hmm... rather horrible monster.
.
The restaurant (opened 12am - 12pm) is a favourite haunt of artists, professors from the Jagiellonian University, businessmen and politicians, all of whom value its elegant decor and excellent cuisine.
Do they look like mythic chimeras? Don't worry, rather not, I suppose :-).
Figuratively chimera means wild or impossible idea or fancy - and they really follow wild and impossible cooking ideas there :-)).
.
Chimera's specialities are traditional Polish and Eastern dishes which have been specially prepared to be low in fat.
.

Favorite Dish: - borsch with a meat pastry and meat-filled ravioli in bouillion;
- roast lamb or goat in herbs or wild boar and venison;
- if you like: trout stuffed with sheep's cheese
Good appetite :-).

AUDREY AND DAVE IN HATS OF THE POLISH GENTRY - Krakow

AUDREY AND DAVE IN HATS OF THE POLISH GENTRY

Szlacheckie Jadlo: Great US friends and Polish food :-)

My wife and I spent the evening (13th November 2005) together with my VT-friend Dave (shdw100) from Kansas City, Missouri, and his charming wife, Audrey, in this great local restaurant named Food of the Gentry in Polish language. So, we had great company and conversation followed by delicious Polish food.

There are wooden (but quite comfortable) tables and chairs in a few pretty rustical chambers. Medieval armours, sabres, swords, wild boar skins hang on walls, flowers and candles liven the rooms up. The service is fast and well trained. Our waiter knew English. When he had noticed me taking pictures he brought two traditional hats of the Polish gentry, each with a pheasant's feather, so we wore the hats to pose for pictures.

The menu (in Polish, English and German) contains a lot of Polish traditional meals so it took us some time to choose our meals. We decided to order a few Polish meals and share them.

Favorite Dish: First of all we were offered (free) a typical Polish appetizer: bread with SMALEC (Polish lard with pork scratchings and onions) - stop count calories just try it :-).

We skipped soups but I'd recommend Polish ZUREK (soup made of fermented - a bit, no worries - rye flour, served in hollowed loaf of bread), BARSZCZ (betroot soup) or GRZYBOWA (wild mushroom soup).

We had a few traditional Polish meals:
- a bowl of pierogi (Polish dumplings with meat, sauerkraut and cheese - don't be confused, they have called them ravioli in English menu ???)
- ribs grilled in honey served on a wooden breadboard (with two sauces)
- kopytka; it's a side dish - small dumplings made of mashed potatoes, eggs and flour in a shape of... diffucult to describe, just order them and look. Kopytka means small hoofs, I don't know why.
- a dish of various grilled meats
- salad from fresh vegetables
- cut and baked potatoes
- "kapusta zasmazana" - Polish side dish, sauerkraut (boiled and then baked a bit) with some herbs and addings.

The food was delicious, I liked especially Polish dumplings and "kopytka". They were as good as my mother used to make at home. We paid for everything with drinks (water, coffee, mulled and spiced wine) and a tip some 180 zl (€ 45 or US$ 55). Not that bad as for 4 persons and a lot of food in so good restaurant at downtown location.

IN TACO MEXICANO - Krakow

IN TACO MEXICANO

Taco Mexicano: For drinks and meetings (inexpensive) Taco Mexicano Review

I can recommend this restaurtant but NOT for tasting Mexican food. It's not good and not Mexican in real!

But there is an underground cellar (a few small and large chambers) there with a pub/bar which serves good Polish and Mexican drinks (Margarita, Tequila). Nice and inexpensive place to meet people, there are a lot of young people and students there - especially Thursday - Sunday. Warm atmosphere in stylish, Mexican interiors.

Favorite Dish: Margarita, polish beer - Zywiec or Tyskie.

TACO MEXICANO RESTAURANT - Krakow

TACO MEXICANO RESTAURANT

Taco Mexicano: NOT real Mexican food Taco Mexicano Review

We went to this "Mexican" restaurant on our VT-meeting in October 2003. There are a few small and large groundfloor and underground chambers there. The underground cellars were opened since 5pm.
Good, warm atmosphere, nice interior design and not at all Mexican food. Hmm... I know it now, after my trip to the USA and Tijuana, Mexico.

English menu available on request.
Opened: midday - 11.30pm. Reservation recommended Thu - Sun. Not expensive.

Favorite Dish: None. Try drinks including Tequila and Margarita and certainly Polish beer (Zywiec or Tyskie).

WIERZYNEK CAFE - Krakow

WIERZYNEK CAFE

Wierzynek: Interior of Cafe Wierzynek Review

In real, Wierzynek Restaurant consists of cafe (ground floor), old-Polish restaurant (1st floor) and cellar underground.

When you pass the first gate you go inside a cafe - quite nice place to drink cafe and try local dessert (cheesecake recommended). You can try Polish beer there as well.

Favorite Dish: A large cup of cafe au lait (cafe with milk) and Polish cheescake - delitious (both).
Local beer if you like :-).

RESTAURACJA WIERZYNEK - ENTRANCE - Krakow

RESTAURACJA WIERZYNEK - ENTRANCE

Wierzynek: Visit interiors and don't eat there Wierzynek Review

HISTORY
Wierzynek, is the oldest 3-store restaurant in Krakow named after its 14th century owner who is said to have held lavish feasts here for Polish king Casimir the Great in 1364 - 6 European kings/emperors arrived: of Poland, Germany, Hungary, Danemark, Cyprus and Armenia + a lot of Polish and German princes.

In real the restaurant located in the building standing probably at the place of famous old inn was established in 1945 and nationalized as the best restaurant in Krakow used by communist authorities to show their famous or unfamous guests how wonderful communist Poland was.

INTERIORS
I dined there only once. Recently we (me + my wife + Kathy = Kodi01 from Dallas, Texas) only visited it's amazing interiors - much more in my Must See Activities tips.

OPINION
Hmm... over-priced restaurant although very, very famous. They serve old Polish, French and Vege food.

Pro: views to Main Market Square) if you have a table by window, amazing renovated Renaissance interiors !!!, Boba Jazz Band and dances in the cellar underground in weekend evenings, they open at 8am, close at midnight.

Con: too slow service!!!, sometimes not very nice (old) waiters, high prices for quite good but not the best food.

Favorite Dish: Generally Polish food was good there but... there are better places to eat in Krakow.
I ate there:
Polish beetroot soup with small meat dumplings (16 zl)
Saddle of deer with cabbage and mushroom dumplings served with juniper sauce (48 zl)
Zywiec beer (5 zl)
Cafe (5 zl)
$1 = 1 Euro = 4 zl that time.

Soup was very good, especially dumplings but deer... not the best to be honest.

JAGIELLONSKA STREET - ROOSTER ON RIGHT - Krakow

JAGIELLONSKA STREET - ROOSTER ON RIGHT

Rooster: Almost nude waitresses on Route 66 Rooster Review

They serve inexpensive Polish and American food - not great variety though - and beer. Open from 11am till midnight.
Hmm... I was there a long time ago and I wasn't satisfied - the food was cheap (right) but not good: neither real American nor real Polish. But beer was excellent - look what beer locals order (it changes) and... follow them.

I do hope - I am almost sure - it changed a lot for better. There is no place for bad restaurants (even if cheap) in Krakow's strict downtown nowadays.

Now walking by a restaurant I always look inside through its windows and I see big painting on the wall: ROUTE 66 from 60' - famous American highway and surely legandary Harley-Davidson motorcycle and I see waitresses - Polish girls (almost nude but ... not the best choice hehe) and I think and dream about coming back to the USA hehe. Hmm... there are a lot of cigarette smoke and people mainly drinking beer inside. There is a smaller room for non-smoking as well now.

Favorite Dish: None in middle 90'.
Now I'd try STEK Z KARKOWKI: steak made of pig neck for 15.30 zl including salad and chips ( $4, 4.5 euros) + Polish beer.

Other possibilities from my picture:
Chicken salad - 8.90
Spaghetti Bolognese - 11.50
Shoarma (what's that???) made of chicken - 13.30

$1 = 3.8
1 Euro = 4.4

MASKA ENTRANCE - Krakow

MASKA ENTRANCE

Maska: Am I a snob? :-)))

Kawiarnia Maska means Cafe Mask :-)). It's located in the cellar under the building of famous and the best (in my opinion) Polish theatre called Teatr Stary (Old Theatre) - 2 min. walk from Main Square. We came there with Kathy (Kodi01) maybe an hour after her arriving to the Krakow's airport.

There are quite different opinions on this place:

- negative:
not nice service (being there a few times I didn't notice that),
place for snobs - a lot of real and not so real artists seem to go there (maybe - are we snobs? wow!),
paid restroom = toilet (that is truth: 1 PLN upstairs - I do NOT like it) etc.

- positive:
great drinks made by top class barman (I agree),
delicious desserts (cakes) - I agree,
unusual interior design (I agree),
English and German menu available (true but it's a standart in Krakow's downtown nowadays).

So, don't be surprised to see my different satisfaction ratings on that place.

Favorite Dish: Various drinks (not for me as a driver - you can try Polish vodka :-) and desserts (cheesecake with strawberry cream served cold, especially = SERNIK MASKA in Polish menu).

Address: Jagiellonska 1

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: From NW corner of Main Square (Rynek Glowny) walk westwards Szczepanska Street towards Szczepanski Square, turn first street left (Jagiellonska) - Maska on your right side :-)
