KANTOR - Kalvarija

KANTOR

KANTOR: Buy Lithuanian money

There was KANTOR in this container put in the middle of Polish side of Budzisko-Kalvarija border crossing point. KANTOR means exchange office in Poland. Hmm... I was looking for exchange office in brick, larger buildings around but I found only a lot of... old, border beaurocracy there.

What to buy: If you have Polish currency (zloty), buy Lithuanian currency, which is called lit (plural litas) and marked LT or Lt, BEFORE you cross the border, that's in Poland. There were many "kantor" along the highway before the border, as well. If you have other currencies than Polish, better (cheaper) buy Lithuanian curruncy AFTER crossing the border (in Lithuania).

Well, Lithuania (+ Slovakia) is going to introduce Euro in 2009, sooner than Poland, Czech and Hungary (in 2010 or later). Check up-to-date information here.

UBEZPIECZENIA on my picture meant insurances. Well, before 1 May 2004, I was obliged to buy a third-party insurance for a car as my so called "Green card" (pan-european third party insurance for cars) didn't cover Lithuania. Now, national insurance of any EU country is valid for Lithuania (and any other of 25 EU countries).

What to pay: When I was last time there (June 2004), I had to pay 1.40 zl (Polish zloty) for 1.00 Lt .

Hmm... VT Currency Converter skipped Lithuania :-(. Use: OANDA 164 currencies converter instead.

Address: 16-411 Szypliszki, Poland

Directions: In the middle of Polish side of the border crossing point, among checkup stands/kiosks.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE - Kalvarija

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

VALIUTOS KEITYKLA: Currency exchange with paid receives

"Valiutos keitykla" means currency exchange in Lithuanian or "kantor" in Polish language. Hmm... I found this large house a little bit strange place for currency exchange. At first I thought it was just a house. It belonged to UAB Medicinos bankas (what a name :-).

What to buy: Lithuanian currency (lit = Lt). How much? Depends on your budget and needs.

Hmm... VT Currency Converter skipped Lithuania :-(. Use: OANDA 164 currencies converter instead.

What to pay: In June 2004 they gave 344.00 Lt for each 100 ?. I asked for a receive and... they gave me 1 Lt less. Hmm... it was a little bit strange to pay for a receive, am I wrong?

Directions: Cross the border from Poland to Lithuania (passport checkup on Polish side and empty Lithuanian side) at Budzisko - Kalvarija, when you pass it drive a few hundreds meters, look at the right.
