Transportation: One-way streets and... cucumbers :-)

Getting TO/AROUND: There were quite many one-way streets in strict historical centre/downtown of Kaunas even if they were not very narrow. Only a few of them were signed as one-way streets in my Kaunas maps. Watch for traffic signs (no entry on my picture). Green brothers (policemen called cucumbers by locals :-) were desperately waiting for my mistake but I didn't do any (in contrast to... San Francisco, where I stopped the traffic once haha).

Getting TO/AROUND: There were many parking meters, like on my picture, put along streets of strict historic old town of Kaunas (at and around Town Hall square). Well, there were no cars parked there but a lot of unpaid places not so far, at walking distance, I mean. Just in case... have change ready, pay there and don't forget to leave a ticket behind a windscreen. As I remember parking was paid only at daytime on business days and costed not that much, anyway, much less than I had to pay in Helsinki, Finland haha.

Getting TO/AROUND: Before my trip to Kaunas I was warned about lack of parking places in Kaunas (and Vilnius as well). I expected to drive around long time to find any parking place. Hmm... it was wrong prejudice. Wherever I drove I had no problem to park my car.In compact area of strict historic old town there were mostly paid parking lots like this one on my picture (by Vytautas Church - full of cars during Holy Mass) and a lot of area to park there.
In so called New Town (Naujamiestis) there were a lot of mainly paid and some unpaid parking space as well.
In some suburbs (residential districts of huge apartment buildings) of Kaunas there were areas of lack of parking space.
Well, I was in Kaunas in warm June weekend. Maybe it would go worse on business days. I was told that they are going to build underground and multi-store parking lots in centre/downtown of Kaunas.

Getting TO/AROUND: I had no problem to park a car in Kaunas. First I parked a car on my hotel parking lot located by Minotel hotel (Minotel Viesbutis) in the heart of the old town, close to main town square (City Hall Square) - on my picture.
Next day I visited the old town on foot and I drove and parked my car at Putvinskio 64 by the Devil Museum (a lot of place for parking a car there) in the New Town. I walked from there to the Independence Square and back to my car.
Then I drove to visit mosque (park by a mosque), Ramybes parkas and Museum of Exiles and Political Prisoners (park on a walkway by the museum at Vytauto gatve) and at the end I drove to Independence Square to visit Russian Orthodox Church (parking lot at Gedimino gatve south of the square (luckily there was a free place there :-).My conclusion: wherever I drove by my car in Kaunas, I easy found free or paid parking place on a street. Well, I was in Kaunas in a weekend.

Getting TO/AROUND: There was paid parking zone in the Old Town (Senamiestis). The zone was marked by signs as on my picture (enlarge). Hmm... this zone was NOT marked on any map of Kaunas, I saw. Well, you must pay in parking meters there. Maybe that's why I didn't see almost any cars parked there.

Getting TO/AROUND: Parking a car was forbidden along quite many streets of Kaunas, especially in the Old Town. And really no-one parked there (what a difference with, say, Florence or Paris :-). Just in case... as I unfortunately got to know during my first trip to Lithuania, tickets in Lithuania must be paid at place, at once and exclusively in Lithuanian currency by cash only! For non-European drivers: these streets were signed by this sign on my picture (enlarge) and the ban was valid for the nearest crossroad unless otherwise stated.

Getting TO/AROUND: Well, Kaunas was not, say Brussels, the capital of the European Union with many convoys of VIPs escorted by police. So, I was surpriced when at one crossroad this policeman, on my picture, stopped the traffic for a few minutes. But I can't complain. Well, there were no European beaurocrats crossing my road but... hundreds of bikes. Leaving Kaunas, I was lucky to see parade of old and new bikes.

Getting TO/AROUND: Nemunas River, on my picture, divided Kaunas into two parts: larger northern with the Old Town and the New Town and most tourist attractions and quiet, mostly green southern part with Aleksotas district on a hill. There were only four bridges acroos the river: one was in the Old Town (on my picture) and the second one in the New Town. The only traffic jam in Kaunas, I could see was just at the entrance to the bridge especially that traffic was narrowed there to one lane on each direction.

Getting TO/AROUND: It happened to me only once during my two trips to Lithuania and just in Kaunas, well, at its suburbs. The large and old, post-soviet truck (like this one on my picture called ZIL) didn't give me the way on a crossroads. Hmm... its driver even didn't look at my car. Did he think that larger can do more or what? Luckily I drove carefully and relatively slow to stop on time. If not... no words.

Getting TO/AROUND: There were a few streets temporarily closed in the old town of Kaunas when I was there. They were signed as on my picture. Drive carefully not to miss the road signs.
This car parked futher on the right was... a road police cars. Green-uniformed policemen (called cucumbers by locals :-) were waiting to stop drivers driving this street. Just in case... tickets in Lithuania must be paid at place (unless you are Lithuanian) and exclusively in Lithuanian cash.
