Please even do not try to look for any information on Rudamina in any travel books or in the web. Hmm... you can eventually ask locals if you want to know more and if you know Lithuanian (sometimes Russian or Polish).
It's definetely off the beaten path village in southern Lithuania, close to Poland.
My page is about more than Rudamina itself. It's about typical Lithuanian countryside and its lazy life, about the past days which are still alive there.
Old, Roman catholic churches luckily survived Soviet occupation in many villages and small towns of Lithuania. Well, some of them were not renovated for years, neglected and closed when I visited them.
Grave of a priest killed by KGB in 1986, which I found in Rudamina, and his story, inspired me to read about unbelievable religious intolerance in the heart of Europe... a few years ago. Well, I look a little bit futher East now, with some sadness and hope as well. More: in my travelogues.
There were lovely wooden houses and not so lovely brick/cement houses, put in no order along main highway or sometimes unpaved track in typical Lithuanian village.
- Pros:No tourists
- Cons:No tourist facilities
- In a nutshell:Simple life is the best!

Matt - please tell me if this is the Rudamina that is close to Vilnius or closer to the Polish border. Thank you
Woo Hoo for homemade brew and the simple life...nothing wrong with that. The CROSS PUT BY RUDAMINA PARISH CHURCH was stunning I think. Great page, their is always an adventure any where we go. How is the echo holding up? Happy Trails!
It looks like there is beautiful countryside in Lithuania, especially in the summertime.
Mat, fabulous page about a really off the beaten path place. I like your research on Juozas Zdebskis. I was lucky enough to also get an impression about local life in a small Lithuanian village just in the middle of nowhere.
Quite a background on Juozas Zdebskis.. very interesting. You did well on your research. Obviously a great find and little known...love those kinds of places. Well done.
Another immersion in deep Lithuania ! More fascinating than any highly touristy place !
Lazy, boring, gossiping, the best life...Matt, you gave us the best of this village especially describing some of the very local customs...
Great page and travelogues Matt! What a wonderful look you give into Lithuanians rural life! :-))
Such detailed info !! And thanks for the first good guide to Rudamina on the web.
Lithuania's very own Virgilina. I'm real glad some of the townsfolk had the guts to stand up to the KGB in those dark days.
