"Peace, quiet and... Esperanto creator" Veisiejai by matcrazy1
Veisiejai Travel Guide: 39 reviews and 50 photos
After visit to hmm... rather ugly Lazdijai it was very refreshing to stop in Veisiejai - green, small, lovely town in southern Lithuania close to Poland.
Dr. Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof (1859 - 1917), lived in the town of Veisiejai from 1886 to 1887. He was Polish-Jew famous creator of the Esperanto language. Hmm... his house didn't survive...
I liked numerous wooden statues and sculptures put outdoors both in Regional Park and around parish church.
- Pros:Peace and quiet in green town, wooden public art, parish church
- Cons:Off the beaten path (may it be con's ?)
- In a nutshell:Escape to green and lovely town

As always, wonderful tips ad great photos! Hope you had a marvelous birthday...
Matt, nice page about this Lithuanian off the beaten path place. I especially like your ZSIGULI tips. Did you know that I once was a front-passenger in a ZSIGULI in Russia? :-)
Dobra strona, Matt! Uczilem sie esperanto (ale juz nie lubie tego jezyka) i wiedzialem ze Zamenhof urodzil w Bialystoku, ale nie, ze mieszkal tyle lat w Litwie. Pozdrawiam, Michele
Fascinaing information about Veisiejai. Enjoyed seeing the religious statues and relics. Also found the cars that used to be popular and the ones popular now. Some great photographs, Matt.
I understand now why Zamenhof invented the Esperanto language. Living in a country with off the beaten path language was an incitement to find an n easier way to communicate !
Lots of natural beauty and plenty of history... some unsual wooden works. Not sure about the local mode of transport:-)... Nice to know you found it safe.
Great pics, Matt! I was looking for some info on Veisiejai, because I believe some of my ancestors lived there in the 19th century. When I visit Lithuania, I shall see this place too.
It begs the question, where does Matt get all that information (even if one or two items are wrong). Another place I've never heard of.
Hi! I'm from Veisiejai:) I want to correct you.You were wrong only about the peasant statue. It was a chronicler. :)
Great page Matt with fun comments :-)) I like that top 5 in the park, LOL :-))
