Street stalls at Pilies gatve: Kitschy stuff

Name of Shop: Street stalls at Pilies gatve
There were a few street stalls at the beginning (close to the Cathedral Square) of Pilies gatve - the main tourist street of the old town. Most of the stuff they offered was a little bit kitschy in my opinion. Anyway, take a closer look and you will find something interesting for you, I am sure.
What To Buy: Hmm... I found these plastic and ceramic mugs on my picture kitschy. They were.decorated with Vilnius pictures. But if you like them...
What To Pay: Haha, cheap area! Not so easy to find in Europe nowadays! Enjoy! Prices in stores were higher, well, the quality better as well.

Street stalls: Russian souvenirs

Name of Shop: Street stalls
There was triangle in shape square at the southern end of Pilies gatve (Castle Street). There were a few tables, street stalls with mostly kitschy souvenirs put there. They were closed in the early evening (approx. 7.00 pm) when I was coming back the same way.
What To Buy: I could find these wooden, colorful and thick dolls on my picture at many street stalls and souvenir stores/shops in Vilnius. Well, they were NOT Lithuanian but Russian so called "babushka dolls" or "Matryoshka" - the most famous Russian gift, a symbol of old Russia. "Babushka" means little old lady or granny in Russian. The dolls were made of wood (linden) by hand. And when you open the first doll and find out there was one more inside, and then even one more, and more, and more... The vendors who sold them could speak fluently Russian but not English. Were they Russians?
What To Pay: Generally low and not fixed prices. Try to bargain (preferably in... Lithuanian or Russian). Good luck :-).

Name of Shop: Kiosks
There were quite many kiosk or stands like on my picture in the old town of Vilnius. They offered cigarettes, newspapers, magazines, tickets for public transportation (buses) and some other small things (chewing gum for exmple).
What To Buy: Newspapers I saw were exclusively in Lithuanian and limited choice in Polish and Russian (largest minorities in Vilnius).
What To Pay: Cigarettes costed (a pocket of 20) from 2.75 Lt (local) to 6.00 Lt. Marlboro costed 4.25 Lt in May 2004 (€ 1.28, US$1.53, 6.10 Polish zloty). Warning: cigarettes will be more and more expensive since Lithuania joined European Union on 1 May 2004.

Name of Shop: Aure...
When I went from KGB museum towards the parliament building I found this store located on northern side of Gedimino prospektas - the most representative street of Vilnius. I paid attention to its shop window with interesting ceramics and I went inside.
What To Buy: Various smaller and larger gifts and souvenirs... mostly rather not Lithuanian, both kitschy and interesting.
What To Pay: From a few litas for very small ceramic figure to... a few hundreds for African style large sculpture.

Name of Shop: Drabuziu Salonas
There were casual clothes mainly for young (or young in mind :-) folks, both for girls and boys. Nothing great (and unknown quality) but you can eventualy try to find something interesting. Pink colour ruled when I was there.
What To Buy: Clothes, clothes, clothes. Mostly in bright pink colour (June 2004).
What To Pay: Rather high as for Lithuania which means reasonable for visitors from say the USA or Western Europe.

I met this street vendor on my picture on a parking lot by Rasos Cemetery. He wanted to sell me amber necklaces. Hmm... I didn't want it, so the vendor decided to pose to my camera.
What To Buy: Amber or... fake amber. I would never buy any jewerly on a street.
What To Pay: Excuse, I don't know but generally... there were low prices for amber in Vilnius and Lithuania.

Street stand: By Rasu Cemetery

Name of Shop: Street stand
When I parked a car by Rasu Cemetery I found 3 temporary tables with umbrellas where locals sold some info leaflets on the cemetery, postcards and limited choice of kitschy souvenirs. When three buses with Polish visitors came at one time just before my arrival I had to wait quite long to buy anything there. And locals made great business. With all that money they gave... Well, I hope there will be real souvenir store and information point (+ toilet/restroom) for visitors put up at this place sooner or later. When I was coming back to my car, this guy on the picture asked me in Polish, whether I understand Lithuanian. When I replied that unfortunately not, he informed me that he was writing a book on Polish Vilnius and that he needed opinions of Poles from Poland but... he wrote the book in Lithuanian language. I wished him good luck :-).
What To Buy: Well, the leaflets with information and map of Rasu Cemetery which I bought were available exclusively in Polish languge and... very poorly printed.
What To Pay: 5.00 Lt per each small leaflet. Quite expensive as for Lithuania but... a must buy for me.

Name of Shop: On TV Tower
The cashier when I bought tickets to lifts leading to the viewing platform of the Vilnius TV tower offered very poor choice of gifts. Additionally I found all of them less or more kitschy, although... if you like... say small figure if TV tower or ceramic dishes with churches of Vilnius painted or...
What To Buy: None. Better save for delicious Lithuanian food :-).
What To Pay: Very high prices as for Lithuania. 43 or 78 Lt (larger) for a figure of TV tower. 29 or 39 Lt for a ceramic dish. 20 Lt for a T-shirt.

TOPO Centras: If you drive from Kaunas

Name of Shop: TOPO Centras
This chain supermarket store is surely not my recommendation for a visitor looking for gifts or something unique and Lithuanian but if you drive from Kaunas... I stopped there for a moment. They sold electric and electronic equipment like computers and accesories, various house electric equipment, cell phones and accessories etc. HOURSMon - Fri: 10.00 am - 8.00 pm, Sun: 10.00 am - 5.00 pm.
What To Buy: If you need batteries, films, video-cassetes for your camera etc. it's a good place (if you drive by).
What To Pay: I looked at the prices and generally hmm... they were not lower than I used to see in Poland and sometimes even higher than in say Berlin, Germany I visited in February 2004.
