URSZULA AND THE GOLDEN PHOENIX RESTAURANT - Vilnius

URSZULA AND THE GOLDEN PHOENIX RESTAURANT

Auksinis Feniksas: Chinese food was expensive!

I did find two Chinese restaurant in Vilnius one on Pilies gatve (Castle Street) and the second one on the most representative street of Vilnius Gedemino prospektas. The second one was called Auksinis Feniksas which meant Golden Phoenix in Lithuanian language .

Excuse, I didn't eat there. Instead I studied their menu.
They offered typical chinese dishes but the prices were high as for Vilnius (approx. 25 - 30 Lt per dish). Hmm... Chinese food was still expensive in Vilnius in 2004 like it was in Poland in early 90'. Will it change soon?
Maybe that's why this restaurant was almost empty in the early afternoon although it was good place to watch people. Hmm... didn't members of nearby Lithuanian parliament eat there?

Favorite Dish: I would try beef or chicken in vegetables (+ Chinese mushrooms necessarily) or... more risky duck. Whenever I want to test skills of a cook in a Chinese restaurant I order just duck. It's not so easy to make duck meat delicious. I tried it by myself twice :-) and I ate not delicious ducks in some Chinese restaurants.

Address: Gedimino prospektas 64, Vilnius

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: From the Cathedral Square qwalk eastwards Gedimino prospektas (approx. 20 min.), the restaurant on the left, opposite to the parliament building.

MILKY WAY CAFE - Vilnius

MILKY WAY CAFE

Paukdciu takas: On the top but not my recommendation

There was revolving cafe Paukdciu takas (Milky Way) on the observation deck of Vilnius TV tower that was at the height of 165 m (541 ft) - the heighest cafe in Lithuania.

Well it was more a cafe or bar than a restaurant. Self-service with quite long queque when I was there and not very comfortable seats made me... not that hungry. I ordered only cafe with cream (2.50 Lt) which was drinkable but... not good in my opinion.

Favorite Dish: None. Expensive (as for Lithuania), not at all Lithuanian food and... there were better addresses in Vilnius. Ok, maybe a glass of mineral water (2.00 Lt, Evian... 4.00 Lt) if needed.

TERRAZZA RESTAURANT IN FORUM PALACE - Vilnius

TERRAZZA RESTAURANT IN FORUM PALACE

Terrazza Restoranas: International cuisine

When we arrived to Vilnius we stopped on a parking lot by Forum Palace to check a map, travel books and prepare to city sightseeing. Well, we wanted only to drink some juice and coffee.

When we entered the Forum Palace by the main entrance we noticed
fancy, rather luxary and very expensive restaurant called Tredici. Good place for a business dinner, I suppose but hmm... not the best place for a cup of coffee.

Luckily we noticed
the restaurant Terrazza with tables put on the open-air terrace. And it was just place we were looking for. They offered international cuisine including few Lithuanian dishes at a price approx. 15 - 20 Lt per main course. Hmm... not at all my recomendations for visitors looking for Lithuanian food but... if you are in Forum Palace... why not?

Working hours:
Daily 11.00 am - noon.
Visa cards were accepted.

Favorite Dish: I drank cappuccino (quite good, 4.00 Lt), Urszula (matcrazy0) drank juice from fresh oranges (delicious, 6.50 Lt) and ordered the tuna salad (13.00 Lt) which was large (enough for two) and good but nothing fancy. Hmm... there was traditional Lithuanian home-made salad (7.50 Lt) in the menu but it contained a sour cream and mayonnaise dressing which was not her favourite.
Finally we paid 25.00 Lt (7.5 ?, $9 incl. a tip).

Address: Konstitucijos pr.26, 2004 Vilnius

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: North of Neris River, relatively close to the centre/downtown, maybe 10 min. drive from the Cathedral Square.

GATE TO SONNETS RESTAURANT IN 18TH C. PALACE - Vilnius

GATE TO SONNETS RESTAURANT IN 18TH C. PALACE

Sonnets: With a style for only 6.6 € ($7.9)

Excuse, I didn't eat in Sonnets restaurant (restauranas). I can only say that its interiors looked very stylish, even luxuriously or... snobbishly and they were empty at least when I was there in early afternoon on business day. The restaurant was placed in renovated interiors of former Palace of Olizars' or Lapacinskis' (Palac Olizarów or Lapacinskich) from 18th century which now houses Shakespeare Hotel.

Favorite Dish: If you come from Monday to Fiday between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm you can choose a complete meal for only 22.00 Lt (6.6 €, $7.9, 32 Polish zl). It was so called DIENOS PATIEKALAS which meant special of the day (menu del dia in Spain).
It consisted of:
- soup OR salad,
- main course
- coffee OR tea OR soft drinks.
Well, ask your waiter for details of your day.
Good apetite :-)

KRISTUPO CAFE - Vilnius

KRISTUPO CAFE

Kristupo kavine: Great location to watch people

After a few hours of walking around Vilnius we got hungry and we found the nice looking restaurant called Kristupo cafe with a few tables put along the main street of the old town - Pilies gatve (Castle Street). Luckily one table was free. It was the best place to watch people in Vilnius. More: there was commemorative plaque affixed on 2nd floor which announced in two languages (Lithuanian and Polish): Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski, famous Polish writer and historician, editor of "Atheneum" magazine, author of historical monograph "Vilnius", lived and worked in this house in 1832-1835. So, it was special place for every Pole, I think.

Well, first we came inside the house which housed the Narutis Hotel. There was fancy, rather luxury hotel restaurant located in 16th century renovated cellars there. Great place but rather for romantic (and expensive) dinner by the candles.

Well,
Kristupo Cafe was touristy and expensive as for Lithuania restaurant with visitors speaking various languages (German, English, Russian) but not Lithuanian. The waiter was English and Russian speaking and gave us menu in Lithuanian and English with prices in both Lithuanian currency (litas) and euros. The service was good and enough fast (not always in Lithuania).

The only incovenience was... the location of the restaurant just by Hotel Narutis. At the end (luckily) of our meals numerous taxes started to stop just by our table. They waited for hotel guests and didn't switch an engine off which was not very pleasant with all that noice and petrol/gas fumes.

Favorite Dish: They offered international cuisine with limited choice of Lithuanian dishes. Well, we ordered too much food :-), mostly Lithuanian food. Most of it tasted good, even very good (it should at this, high price) but... HORN beer and sausages a'la Lithuania were not the best choice.

Hmm... our bill was for 102.00 Lt (€ 31, US$ 37, 146 Polish zloty) in total that was for beer, juices, soups, main courses, appetizers etc., with taxes - as always in Europe - but without a tip. We have never paid so much in Lithuania.

For budget visitors: 1.00 - 1.50 Lt was enough not to walk hungry around Vilnius (look for food carts/stalls with local potato buns called "pyrageliai").

Address: Pilies gatve 24, Vilnius

MATCRAZY0 WITH HORN BEER :-) - Vilnius

MATCRAZY0 WITH HORN BEER :-)

Kristupo kavine: HORN - not the best beer

They advertised and served Lithuanian HORN beer (made by Ragutis brewery in Kaunas) in Kristupo kavine. I never heard about it, so I decided to order it and... it was my mistake. It was too light and a little bit sweet and simply not the best beer in my opinion.
Large Horn (0.5 l = 16.91 oz) costed 5.00 Lt (1.45 €) - tourist or... capital's (Vilnius) price.

Favorite Dish: Next time I would order Svyturys beer - a pale larger brewed by Svyturys brewery in Klaipeda, Lithuania. Later it became my favourite Lithuanian beer. Add here Utenos Porter, favourite Lithuanian beer of my wife, if you like porters...

NIBBLES FOR BEER - Vilnius

NIBBLES FOR BEER

Kristupo kavine: What did "nibbles" mean ?

They offered two kinds of "prie alaus" = for beer (snacks for beer) each at the price of 5.00 Lt (€ 1.45): hot sandwich with Hungarian style bacon which I didn't order.

Favorite Dish: I ordered "A mix of nibbles to go with beer". Haha, I didn't know (as usual :-) what I ordered in real as I didn't know the meaning of English word "nibbles", silly me. Well, "nibbles" means small amounts of food that are eaten between or before meals esp. with alcoholic drinks.
My nibbles in Kristupo kavine (on the picture) tasted much better than HORN beer.

TUNA SALAD - Vilnius

TUNA SALAD

Kristupo kavine: Good tuna salad but... not a sauce!

They served a few kinds of salads in Kristupo including:
- Caesar salad with anchovy-mustard sauce and freshly grated Parmesan (9.00 Lt, € 2.60),
- Spinach and endive salad with bacon, shrimps, mushrooms and walnuts (14.00 Lt, € 4.05),
- Vegetable and fruit salad with yoghurt-cream sauce (10.00 Lt, € 2.90).
Well we didn't order any of them.

Favorite Dish: Instead matcrazy0 ordered tuna salad with tomatoes, celeries, apples, eggs and mustard sauce for 11.00 Lt (€ 3.19). Well, the salad was good (but nothing fancy) but... we both didn't like the accompanied sauce. Luckily they didn't mixed it.

MY CHICKEN SALAD :-)) - Vilnius

MY CHICKEN SALAD :-))

Kristupo kavine: My recommendation and... warning

First warning: as I noticed later they used to add various sauces to salads in Lithuanian restaurants, usually mustard or creamy sauces. At least in touristy (= more expensive) restaurants they described the sauces in menu but in more local restaurants there was no info on that in a menu. Well, if you don't like the sauces (I didn't!) ask the waiter in advance not to add them to your salad.

Favorite Dish: Now, my recommendation :-))) for 13.00 Lt (€ 3.77):
Seasonal vegetables with grilled chicken slices. Well, the chicken slices tasted delicious although they were accompanied only by some tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms and a lot of lettuce (had to be cheap :-).

CLEAR BROTH AND TWO KIBIN, KARAIM STYLE - Vilnius

CLEAR BROTH AND TWO KIBIN, KARAIM STYLE

Kristupo kavine: Broth and Karaim cuisine

Kristupo kavine offered 5 soups ("sriubos"):
1. Cold red beet soup with boiled potatoes (6 Lt, € 1.75),
2. Cold apple and curry soup (7 Lt, € 2.03),
3. Cream of tomato sup (7 Lt, € 2.03),
4. Ukrainian borsch (6 Lt, € 1.74),
5.
Clear broth and two Kibin, Karaim style (9 Lt, € 2.67).
Well, cold soups are typical Lithuanian, inexpensive dish (not known in my = far away off Lithuania, southern part of Poland); tomato soup, borsch (why do they call it Ukrainian ?) and broth are common in Eastern Europe althouth those Kibin are typical for local Karaim cuisine.

Favorite Dish: Clear broth and especially two Kibin tasted very good - my recommendation.
