War is over, time for tourists!

Canadian troops (SFOR) near Bosanski Petrovac.

This beautiful country of very sympathetic people is unfortunatelly destroyed by war. Now (May 2002) it's not dangerous for tourists!. I drove a car from Split (Croatia) to Zagreb (Croatia) via Bosnia & Herzegovina visiting Bosanski Petrovac and Bihac.

On the border crossing point in Strmica the custom officer was very surprised and asked me why I don't drive the shortnest and quickest road from Split to Zagreb (inside Croatia) and why I don't have the visa. He sent me to the military chief of the border crossing point. I said that from 1st May I'm not obliged to have a visa. He checked up faxes, said he knew nothing on it,rang somehere and finally said OK (citizens of Poland,Czech and Slovak do not need visa from 1st of May to 1st of October), have a nice stay in B&H.

My first impressions from this one day trip are the following:
1. there are empty roads here, 40 min. of driving and no car!,
2. there are many destroyed, burn out houses and cars by the road,
3. there are very beautiful mountains,
4. the SFOR troops I met near Bosanski Petrovac (Canadians) were very friendly,
5. people here are usually poor but very friendly,
6. eating is great (you may pay in Euro or Croatian Kuna),
7. there are mines by the road so, it's better not to go anywhere from the road (except cities of course),
8. the roads are in almost good condition, secondary roads maybe partly destroyed.

IF YOU TRAVEL BY CAR IN CROATIA IT'S REALLY WORTH OF SEEING B&H, TOO.

i will love to visit B&H one day. i remember a close relative was deployed here as a police officer. she was either in police in pakistan, my home country, or in UK. i don't remember.

Matt, a very interesting page on your impressions of post-war B&H. Too bad that things like that still have to happen in the world. This is one of the areas of Europe I have always wanted to visit. My son-in-law did two tours there with the Canadian Army

Come see BiH in a few more years. I work for NATO and SFOR and we are rebuilding this as fsat as possible.

Must be scary having to worry about mines. No wonder you saw so few cars. People are afraid to go out. Was the SFOR the reason you wanted to see Vancouver during your western USA trip?

This is one of your best pages. I'd like to see B & H. But I don't know if I'd go to the "discoteque Atila".
