    Getting TO/AROUND: There was neither one main airport nor one main railway station in Berlin. You should know which of them you are going to go before booking/buying your ticket.

    AIRPORTS
    Tegel (TXL) - the frequent-flyer airport approx. 20 - 30 min north-west from the city centre;
    Schönefeld (SXF) - the holiday airport approx. 20-35 min. southeast of the city centre;
    Tempelhof (THF) - the city airport approx. 10-15 min. south of the city centre.
    More: click here

    TRAIN STATIONS
    For the historical reasons there isn't one main railway station in Berlin. Instead there were 9 train stations ("bahnhof"):
    1. Zoologischer Garten,
    2. Ostbahnhof Berlin,
    3. Lichtenberg,
    4. Spandau,
    5. Wannsee,
    6. Schönefeld,
    7. Charlottenburg,
    8. Friedrichstraße,
    9. Alexanderplatz.
    The first two were centrally located. The last three were for regional trains.
    All train-stations were well connected to the public transport.

    Warning: whenever you go to Berlin you must know on which station to get off the train.

    Tickets: click here (tickets online) or call the number below (Reservation Hotline).

    European train timetable (+ booking service) by DB: click here (service available in English, French, German and Italian).

    Look for DB logo on my picture. DB means Deutsche Bahn that is German Railway.

    Getting TO/AROUND: The streets of Berlin are usually called in German typical way: a proper name of the street with German word "straße" (street) at the end like: Tiergartenstraße, FredrichStraße etc. On some maps you can find Tiergarten Strasse, Fredrich Strasse etc. instead.

    Apart from "Straße" there were "Allee" (avanues) like Prenzlauer Allee, "Damm" (boulevard?) like Kürfurstendamm or Mehringdamm and Promenade like Prenzlauer Promenade. Hmm... add Prenzlauer Chaussee. More? OK, there is... Weg (like Querweg, Polziner Weg), Ring etc.
    Confused?

    OK, a little more names:
    Platz = Square
    Markt = Square (Market)

    Warning: there are sometimes the same names for say Straße, Allee and Damm. There is Kürfurstendamm and Kürfurstenstraße. So, always use the whole name. More: notice that there are exactly the same names for streets located in different, distant districts of Berlin. So, sometimes it's necessary to know the name of the district where the street is located.

    Transportation: Not my recomendation
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
    Getting TO/AROUND: I found this bus on my picture parked on southern side of Kurfurstendamm (Ku-Damm) by number 225. It was 2-floor, scheduled bus line called City Circle Tour. It costed 18 euros (full day ticket with unlimited boarding) or 14 euros (half-day ticket, till 2.00 pm). The first bus started at 10.00 am, the last one at 3.00 pm. every 15-30 min. (4.00 pm and every 10-15 min. in summer = 4 April - 2 November). The full non-stop trip lasted 2 hours.

    The itinerary contained
    14 stops by most famous points of interests around Berlin including:
    - Potzdamer Platz,
    - Jewish Museum,
    - Checkpoint Charlie,
    - Alexanderplatz,
    - Berlin Cathedral
    - Unter den Linden,
    - Branderburg Gate
    - Palace Charlottenburg.
    On Sat. and Sun. add 17 Juni Flea Market.

    Nice itinerary but definetely NOT my recommendation. Why?
    1.
    One day ticket for public transportation (bus, U-bahn, S-bahn, tram) costed over 3 times less: 5.60 euros;
    2. Public transportation was very efficient in Berlin (which meant more flexibility and no need to wait up to 30 min. for next City Circle Tour bus);
    3.
    There were bus lines 100 and 200 which passed by most of the tourist attractions mentioned above.

    Enjoy!

    Getting TO/AROUND: I found public transportation very efficient in Berlin. And there was one ticket available for all 4 means of transportation. Simply it's my recommendation!

    The public transportation consisted of:
    1.
    U-bahn: metro/subway lines run by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) company; they went underground only in some parts of Berlin downtown/centre, above the ground in the other parts.

    2.
    S-bahn: 15 suburban trains run by another company: S-Bahn Berlin GmbH. They went underground at some parts of centre/downtown and covered "greater Berlin" area.

    3.
    public buses - a lot of scheduled bus lines including quite many night buses.

    4.
    trams - exclusively in the area of former East Berlin.

    Getting TO/AROUND: I found this Berlin City Tour bus waiting for consumers at Ebertstraße between Branderburg Gate and Reichstag.

    The offer included 1.5 hour bus tour with live comment in German or English. The itinerary was the following: Schloß Bellevue - Reichstag - Branderburg Tor - Berliner Dom - Alexander Platz - Gendamenmarkt - Checkpoint Charlie - Potsdamer Platz - Siegesäule.

    Interesting itinerary but definetely NOT my recommendation unless it costs less than my one day ticket for U-bahn, S-bahn and buses that was 5.60 €. Rather impossible.

    Getting TO/AROUND: Berlin's metro lines (U-bahn) and trains (S-bahn) close between 0.30 am and 1.00 am on Sun - Thu night and start to operate back at approx. say 5.00 am. But there were a lot of night buses called in German "nachtlinie" and marked by letter N at the beginning like N6 on my picture.

    Nighttime service (approx. 0.30 am - 4.30 am):
    1. The S-bahn offers nighttime service only on Fridays, Saturdays before public holidays, at intervals of 30/60 min.

    2. The metro (
    U-bahn) offers nighttime service only on Fridays, Saturdays before public holidays, at intervals of 15 min.

    3. Nightime
    tram and bus service runs at 30-min. intervals (except less frequent N12 and N16) 7 days a week.

    Getting TO/AROUND: Do not be afraid to come back to your hotel by metro/subway (U-bahn) at late night on Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun (on other days they stop to operate at approx. 0.30 - 1.00 am).
    I felt very safe and comfortable coming back to my hotel from Kreuzburg (wide, empty but good lighted streets) to my hotel in Charlottenburg (not empty streets) around 2 am on Sunday. The same at not empty U-bahn stations and trains which I used that time.

    Transportation: Bus 100 and 200 - my recommendation
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
    Getting TO/AROUND: The double-decker city bus No 100 passes most of the touristic spots in Berlin. It goes from Bahnhof Zoo in the west to Prenzlauer Berg in the east. The busline is an easy way to discover Berlin and to meet other visitors from all over the world, at least in summer season.

    BUS 100
    Itinerary:
    Alexanderplatz
    Unter den Linden
    Platz der Republik (Reichstag)
    Haus der Kulturen der Welt
    Schloss Bellevue
    Großer Stern
    Breitscheidplatz
    Zoologischer Garten

    Driving time:
    Alexanderplatz - Zoologischer Garten:
    approx. 30 minutes.

    Tickets:
    2.20 € for up to 2 hours (unlimited number of stops).
    5.60 € till 3.00 next day.
    Both are valid for all buses, trams, U-bahn and S-bahn trains in A + B zone (city limits). Available at bus driver (have a change!) and newstands with logo BVG.

    BUS 200
    Another good option at the same prize is to take bus No 200:

    Itinerary:
    Alexanderplatz
    Unter den Linden
    Wilhelmstraße
    Potsdamer Platz
    Philharmonie
    Breitscheidplatz
    Zoologischer Garten

    Driving time:
    Alexanderplatz - Zoologischer Garten:
    approx. 30 minutes.

    Getting TO/AROUND: Metro/subway stations are called U-bahnhof in German. The entrances to them are marked by large, blue information tables with abbrevation U-bhf and the name of the station written. The stations were always easy to find. Remember that many metro stations are located over ground.

    Getting TO/AROUND: WHERE TO BUY A TICKET?
    There were small newstands/ticket offices signed by BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) logo located at the entrances to U-bahn (metro/subway) stations. There were BVG ticket machines there as well.

    In newstands outside the stations I usually could buy only single tickets but not for example one-day tickets.

    MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION
    Tickets were always valid both for U-bahn (metro/subway), and for S-bahn (city fast train), buses, trams (in former East Berlin).

    FARE ZONES:
    A - it's the area within the Berlin urban rail (S-Bahn) ring line;
    B - the area with the city borders;
    C - the area surrounding Berlin
    All tourist attractions I visited were located in zone A, there were some in zone B as well, I was sure.
    There were tickets for zone A+B, B+C and A+B+C available.

    TICKET FARES
    I bought one-day-ticket for A+B zone valid until 3 a.m. the day after cancellation. It was valid for U-bahn, S-bahn, buses and trams.

    Fare for zone A + B (= within city limits):
    Single fare ticket € 2,20
    Short trip € 1,20
    Day ticket € 5,60
    7-day-ticket - transferable and valid 7 days after cancellation - € 23.40.
