BERGER KING
On the way back from Yorckschlosschen Club and Bar to our hotel in Charlottenburg district we suddenly felt somewhat hungry. It was about 2.30 am on Sunday and the only place to eat that time was this Burger King restaurant. Haha, we were not alone there, we were surpriced to see quite many consumers, we even had to stay in a short line.
HOURS:
Mon - Thu: 9.00 am - 3.00 am
Fri - Sat: 9.00 am - 5.00 am
Sun: 10.00 am - 3.00 am.
Favorite Dish: Favourite dish? None. The best was toilet there :-).
Hmm... we ordered Tomato-Mozzarella salad for 3.79 € and Big King (a bun with beef) for 2.60 € which were not good, esp. the salad wasn't fresh, I suppose.

IPENING HOURS OF MCDONALD's
I couldn't find any fixed schedule for Berlin restaurants neither in my travel books nor when I was walking around there. I saw restaurants which were open at 9am or 12am or... 7pm. They closed them often between 11pm and 1 am but some earlier at say 9pm as well. Very few stay open non-stop and quite many were closed... on Sunday.
Hmm... what a mess! Chaos in well organized Germany? Is Berlin really a German city? Or maybe there is more market economy (= pretty "chaos" :-) there?
I was coming back from Yorkschlosschen Club in Kreuzberg (artistic district) to my hotel in Charlottenburg (downtown/centre of West Berlin) at night, before 2am on Sunday. Fast foods including McDonald's and Burger King were the only restaurants open that time and... quite crowded in Charlottenburg. It seems they loved to eat at 2am :-) Don't you?
Just one example, look at opening hours at McDonald's which I visited when... nature called me :-):
Mon - Thu: 7am - 1am
Fri - Sat: 7am - 2am
Sun and holidays: 8am - 1am
Guten apetiten and gute nacht :-)
Favorite Dish: No dish, just toilet/restroom if needed.
Address: Adlergestell 289a, 12489 Berlin, Germany

MCDONALD'S COFFEE INFO
I ordered cafe au lait (coffee with milk) and cappuccino. Certainly coffee in McDonald's was relatively cheap and it was cheap in real that is not good but drinkable.
Hmm... I missed Italy and they did know it, I suppose. At least they called small coffee - "classico" (costed 0.99 - 1.30 euros) and large one - "grande" (1.65 - 1.80 euros). But the names were fake. Go to Italy to taste real taste of grande cappuccino :-)
Favorite Dish: No dish, just toilet/restroom if needed.

MCDONALD'S SPARMENUS INFO
In contrast to say Poland or Czech, McDonald's (is there the plural form from McDonald's? ) in Berlin and Germany were much less expensive than local (German) restaurants. So, they were probably acceptable opportunity for not very hungry, low budget visitors (never in Czech or Poland though).
So called "SPARMENUS" (what does it mean "Spar" in German?) consisted of:
1. look at my picture (better enlarge or put good glasses on),
2. medium portion of chips (= small portion of french fries for US visitors :-)
3. a drink (0.4 l = 13.5 oz ; Coke, Fanta, Sprite or "Lift Apfelsaftschorle" - is it apple juice?).
Add 1 ketchup (small bag not a bottle :-) or 1 MAYO (what's that? sauce of ancient Maya people?).
It costed 4.39 euros (fixed price in the whole Germany).
Favorite Dish: No dish, just toilet/restroom if needed.

MCDONALD'S
I arrived in Berlin by my car before midnight. Before reaching the center/downtown to look for accommodation I stopped in the suburbs by this McDonald's on my picture. Hmm... not to eat anything there but because nature called me and I had to check the map. And surely - as always in MDs - the toilet/restroom was clean with nice fragrance and music inside. At least I know why they call a toilet - restroom in the USA :-)
Hmm... my general advice is to do what I did before you enter the dowtown of any larger German city when parking a car maybe not so easy (I was told that sometimes at some parts of Berlin 1 hour or more was needed). Take care of your urinary bladder :-)
Generally I don't like food in McDonald's and I eat there only when I have no choice. Btw, believe me - it is NOT American food although definetely American company unless Japaneses bought it, didn't they?
When to go to McDonald's?
My last four reasons:
1. when nature calls you,
2. when you think that you are too thin,
3. when you have no more money (no worries, it may always happen :-)
4. when everything around is closed.
Favorite Dish: No dish, just toilet/restroom if needed.
OK, just in case... you can choose:
- salad - usually quite eatable: "chicken salat" for 2.99 or "chef salat" for 2.00 euros;
- coffee ("kaffee") - not good but drinkable in my opinion. Take time to cool your coffee, it takes ages in their paper mugs. Never take it to your car unless you have special, perfectly closed mug - cleaning is expensive there;
- hot fruit (apple) cake called "Heiße Apfeltashe" (0.99 euro). Warning: it was too sweet and too hot - be careful. If you are from the USA you can eventually try to sue them in American court :-).

BREAKFAST IN HOLIDAY INN GARDEN COURT
I ate very good breakfast in restaurant on 5th floor (nice views through glass wall) of my hotel - Holiday Inn Garden Court Kurfuersterdamm. As usual in hotels they served food in the typical way - eat what you want (we call it in Polish language: Swedish table, I wonder why?). Only additional coffee was served by waiters. There was good choose of different food (salads, meats, toasts, cheese, fried eggs and sausages etc.) and I must admit that after the breakfast I didn't want to eat any lunch in Berlin.
The restaurant is open from 6.30 am to 10.30 am. In case the breakfast is not included in your rate the price is 13 euros per person.
Favorite Dish: Small, local (very fresh and warm) bread rolls.
Salads - various, personally I liked one with Greek style cheese.
German (I think) small, fried sausages.
Meat - esp. ham and one kind of pepper sausages cut in slices.

EDEKA MARKT
Edeka is a name rather of small chain groceries than restaurants in Berlin and Germany. The store sold all kinds of everyday stuff including German, French and Italian cheeses and meats like boulette, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, salami, ham etc. Add German beers and liquors. Everything at average prices.
But they also prepared sandwiches and coffee at place to take out. It was good place for budget travelers. You can choose cheap and fresh buns or French bread with salami, mozzarella, tomatoes, mixed salad etc. for only 1.50 ? - 2.00 ?. Add some warm dishes like "Rindfleisch" (beef) for 1.10 ?, "boulette" for 0.80 ?.
HOURS
Mon. - Fri: 8.00 am - 6.30 pm,
Sat.: 8.00 am - 1.30 pm,
Sun.: closed.
Favorite Dish: Baguette mit Mozzarella, Tomate und Basilik = French bread wirh mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and basil for 2.00 €. Delitious :-).
Alternatively, if you don't like mozzarella choose crab salad.

AT MOTORWAY/FREEWAY STOP
Excuse, it's a tip not at all on Berlin but it maybe usuful for visitors driving to Berlin.
Leaving Berlin by a car, on my way back to Poland I took Autobahn (freeway/motorway) 13 (E36, E55) and I stopped at the first rest area ("rasthaus" in German) in Motzen. There was a simple fast food restaurant there which served some kind of fast food, drinks, coffee etc. There was no English menu available but you could see what you order.
Food along a freeway in Germany/Europe and the USA
I tried some food served at rest areas by freeways in Europe and it often didn't taste good esp. in former East Germany, Italy (but capuccino was great :-) and once in Austria (south of Wien).
By the way I liked the quite different way of organizing "eating places" along freeways in the USA.
In Europe:
Restaurants while driving a freeway are easy accessible because they are located at rest areas. But the choice is very limited (usually one rest area can room only one restaurant) which means no real competition and lower quality, sometimes higher prices as well. In real there is NO free market in that matter. Instead the licence (of a state institution usually) to run a restaurant at rest area is necessary (expensive and eventually corruptive way in my opinion). Surely you can take any exit and look for any restaurant somewhere there but it is not comfortable and often takes much time.
In the USA:
There are NO restaurants at rest areas along freeways = they are banned there. Instead there are numerous restaurants located often one by one close to an exit - no special licences needed there. They are advertised on a freeway by large tables FOOD and number of exit.
Favorite Dish: None.
We ordered a plate of mixed salad, meat (pork) goulash with a bun + coffee and simply it was the worst food I ever tasted in Germany.
Address: Rasthaus Motzen
Comparison: about average
Directions: Rest area Motzen on freeway/motorway 13 (Autobahn 13 = E36 = E55) Berlin - Dresden and Berlin - Wroclaw, Poland between exit 3 (Krumer See) and 4 - approx. 25 km south of Berlin city limits.
Price: US$11-20
