I lived in Shinonoi from June '03 to April '04. It's a 10 minute train from downtown Nagano City, but it may as well be an hour. As it is primarily a suburb of seniors, Shinonoi was a very very quiet place.
However, I had an awesome mountain view out my front door and in the summer there are orchards with apples and peaches within a couple minutes bike ride.
Nagano grows The Best Peaches in The World. No lie.
- Pros:Fresh fruit, climate, soba
- Cons:Weak nightlife
- In a nutshell:Mountains, monkeys, soba, and snowboards.
