This entry is temporary - there is so much more to Istanbul!
According to Wikipedia Istanbul is the third most populous city in the world next to Mumbai an Karachi, but for me Istanbul was like waking up in a dream. When I was small I had a book that talked about the sultans and their palaces, but I thought Topkapi was fictional. What a surprise it was when I learned that it was real! Another surprise was that the city lies in two continents, Europe and Asia. Sailing up the Bosphorous is an unsurpassable experience, particularly stopping by the many restaurants along its shores. But what is truly humbling is to hear the call to prayer - a simple, powerful voice. I am overcome with emotions! |

nicolaitan Thu Jul 16, 2009 12:57 UTC nice to see that nobody can agree on what that lovely fountain is really for. maybe camel washing? | marsistanbul Fri Jul 10, 2009 08:53 UTC Hi Nomad, regarding to pic.7 it's a wall fountain(Sebil),single face or facade fountain. It's not a place for ablution, just small kiosk for a drinking water..or cooling off in a hot days:) brgds.. | Mikebb Fri Mar 20, 2009 22:57 UTC Turkey offers something "special". I have never read a bad report on VT. It is a country I must put on my "Must See" list. Nice photos and the Q & A is a good idea. | TheWanderingCamel Thu Feb 12, 2009 15:22 UTC You're right about the fountain outside the mosque - it's obligatory for Musims to perform ablutions (wudhu) before praying. |
