Lago di Como ... nurture your senses

by nomad7890 - last update: Sep 14, 2005

Beautiful views at every turn

Sit back on the boat and enjoy the view!
Lago di Como holds many surprises. One of the best ways to enjoy it is to simply sail across the lake, choosing one of the slower boats to take in the scenery. The boats stop in many of the little towns around the lake but, unlike some places that start looking similar, the many mansions around the lake are all unique, and each new stop brings another discovery. The boats have good beverage and snack services, and in the evening they have dinner sailings. Lago di Como is *not* about any of the actors who live there - it is however, like having walked into a very romantic movie, only you are truly there. Each little town has different activities. Due to the short time we mostly visited Varenna and Como - but spending a couple of days around the lake and exploring more towns would be a great way to explore the area.
Start your walk into town around the lake

Varenna is perfect for hiking and a meal

Visit all the VT pages on Varenna. This little town offers beautiful places to walk. The flower lined passage leads to many streets that end climbing up to the center of the town. It is great hike! We went for a walk shortly after our wonderful lunch at Alberco Olivedo. It is good to plan to spend a little longer time in Varenna as there are many nice hikes and things to see.

Como is a larger town with many good activities

Como is a good place to end your trip to Lago di Como. If coming to Lago di Como for a day tour from Milan, one good approach is to take the train into Varenna. Start from Stazione Centrale in Milan, and take the train that goes to Tirano - but get off in Varenna. This is a very nice ride with some "tunnel action". You can then plan what towns you want to visit. I would definitely keep Varenna in the "must see" list! The best way to end the trip is in Como, as there is a train station a couple of blocks to the left of the funicular in this picture that returns to Milan pretty fast, although not a beautiful route, but works out great for the end of the day when it will be getting darker. Train ends up in the Cadorna metro station where it is easy to link up with the metro to reach most places in Milan. The funicular in the picture offers great views - it is pretty high up there!

Pros:"Beautiful surroundings, great activities, easy access from Milan"
Cons:"Some of the popular towns like Bellagio can be crowded in the summer"
In A Nutshell:"Fabulous!"
