Lake Mary is a quiet little town approximately 20 miles north of Orlando. Across the highway several new office parks have been built, and lately it has not been quite a sleepy as before - there are several hotels and restaurants. Chances are Lake Mary will not be a vacation destination - but it sure is a nice place to come home to after vacation.
Living in Florida means the possibility of hurricanes from June to November. Fortunately the storms seldom come through Orlando, but in 2004 three of them came across - fortunately Ivan skipped us. Ivan was by far the strongest storm and the first time in 24 years since we live in the area that we boarded up the windows.
It is rather strange to call your husband's doctor from Granada and hear that they're closed for the hurricane. When we returned, we found our home just as we left it - just the fence in the backyard got a bit battered.
So ... three hurricanes in one season helped us make up our mind to buy a second home in San Jose (California) - so we are now really nomads and spend a couple of days in San Jose once in a while - but can't part with our Lake Mary home. Did I overlook mentioning we also have grandkids in San Jose? Overall, Lake Mary it's still a pretty sleepy town - but if you need a map and belong to AAA you're in luck - their world headquarters are just around the corner, although they now call the other half of Lake Mary that is west of the highway "Heathrow" . Guess Lake Mary was too much of a sleepy name for corporate headquaters.
This may seem like a strange picture for a home page - but take a look at the clouds. Ever see a movie where a time tunnel is about to surface, maybe a bit surreal - this is what it felt like. The clouds were clustered but they were moving as if following directions in a spiral motion - very interesting! |
